A group of young teenagers are alleged to have driven a stolen car to a home in central Canberra before crawling through a pet door so they could get inside.
Once in there, the group allegedly used a mop to assault a man before fleeing the scene.
As a result of the incident, ACT Policing has issued a reminder about home security to the community, reminding Canberrans to make sure they secure their homes and hide their valuables.
Detective Acting Inspector Heidi Wright said offenders usually look for unlocked doors and pet doors or windows left open so they can grab what they can and make a quick getaway.
“If an offender can’t see an easy way in, they often won’t try,” she said.
It is alleged that on 23 July 2025, three boys and a fourth unknown person drove a stolen BMW sedan to a street in Griffith.
Two of them, a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old, allegedly tried to enter a home through its doors, but were unsuccessful as both were locked.
Meanwhile, another 15-year-old and the fourth person allegedly entered a different home on the same street through a pet door.
The pair allegedly stole car keys and a mobile phone before leaving, but then returned to the home with the two others.
This time, one of the intruders allegedly hit a male occupant of the home on the head with a mop handle before all four fled the scene in the stolen car.
An ACT Policing spokesperson said the whole incident was captured on CCTV and reported to police.
Following an investigation, the three teenage boys were arrested and charged with multiple offences, including burglary, assault, theft and riding a vehicle without consent.
The spokesperson said inquiries were continuing to identify the fourth person.
