ACT Policing arrested three men aged in their 20s in Belconnen last night (Thursday, November 22) after a confrontation in which one man armed himself with a pair of scissors, forcing officers to draw a firearm and a Taser.
Members from Belconnen General Duties and the Specialist Response Group (SRG) responded to the address after a report of a disturbance involving up to 10 people. Police entered the Belconnen unit and quickly identified three aggressive men, who appeared to be the instigators of the disturbance.
ACT Policing will allege shortly after two officers entered the unit, two of the three men rushed past police and attempted to seal off the exit to the unit. Police called for urgent assistance and attempted to negotiate with the offenders without success.
Given the aggressive manner of the men, police had fears for the safety of the unit’s other occupants. Two of the three men grabbed an officer, forced him into the stairwell where tried to close the front door. The officer then had to forcibly regain entry and deploy OC stray in order to re-enter the unit.
While other officers arrived in support, the officer inside the unit was threatened by a man with a pair of scissors. A Taser and a firearm were drawn by the officers, and the offender complied.
Three men, aged 21, 23 and 25-years-old respectively, were arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House where they were all charged with common assault and obstruct territory public official. The 25-year-old was also charged with possess offensive weapon. The men will appear before the ACT Magistrates Court today.
