A man is accused of ramming a police car when trying to escape from officers earlier this week.

Police began looking for a man after an alleged incident with security guards at the Australian National University on Monday morning (11 August), an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

Officers patrolling Lyneham soon saw the driver of a Volkswagen Tiguan allegedly run a red light on Northbourne Avenue and directed them to pull over; instead, the driver sped away.

The car was spotted in Dickson that afternoon, where police attempted to stop the driver, but the driver allegedly reversed into a police vehicle.

A man was then removed from the car and arrested.

The alleged driver, 44-year-old Jose Maria Canizares, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday (12 August).

He was handed charges that included dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and refusing to undergo drug and alcohol testing over Monday’s allegations.

No pleas were entered to any charges, and his defence lawyer said he would not apply for bail.

Magistrate Alexandra Burt remanded him in custody and adjourned the matters to 1 September.
