A 20-year-old woman has been arrested and charged as part of an investigation into the alleged release of a chemical substance in a City nightclub.
Police were alerted to an incident inside an Alinga Street nightclub at about 1:30 am this morning (17 August).
“When police arrived, many patrons were exiting the premises with breathing difficulties along with eye and skin irritation,” an ACT Policing statement said.
The premises was evacuated by police and ACT Fire and Rescue’s HAZMAT team examined the area.
Witnesses helped police identify a 20-year-old woman as a person of interest.
She was located a short time later and placed under arrest.
“A search of her possessions allegedly located a can of oleoresin capsicum spray inside a black handbag,” an ACT Policing statement said.
“Police believe this was the substance released.”
The woman has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon with intent and acting causing public harm.
She will appear in court at a later date.
