What does the hive think about the best shops to buy PC bits and pieces in Canberra?
I know best prices can be found on the web but I want to talk to someone about my purchases.
I’ve had a bit of hit and miss at JBs.
Any views on Officeworks ?

Sorry to revive an old discussion, but I used to use Gemini Tech in fyshwick but they have appeared to disappeared. Mind you I am after the refurbishment of a HTPC (have a very expensive silverstone case I want to reuse and other components).
So does anyone have some recommendations, it has been so long since I even considered assembling a PC.
Hi, I do this stuff as a sole trader. I’d be happy to have a chat and give you a quote, buy the parts, build the machine, chuck out all the rubbish, test and configure it all, come to your place, set it all up and give you a half-hour training/introduction and a proper tax invoice.
So there’s the service part taken care of.
However, expect to pay a about $350 on top of the raw parts price, because service costs money.
Not everyone thinks it’s worth paying someone to do this stuff for them, but there’s seems to be a gap in the market in Canberra for this sort of thing, so here I am.
My contact info will be available here for a week or two: http://region.com.au/drose

buy from MSY online, and pick up from their shopfront in Fyshwick.
Funny tried to do that last night. I select the store, select systems, then select the type I want and it loads up a .pdf with the price list. Bit hard to select what you want off that.
It’s a test. If you can’t figure out how to order from MSY, then MSY is not for you. It would have to be about the worst designed site ever, but it does work.
The reason you have to wait so long at MSY Fyshwick is because it’s always full of people asking dumb questions. Please people, if you’re going there, you MUST know the exact model number of the part you want, ask for it, pay, leave. Should take less than 2 minutes, not 15 per customer. Even if you don’t place the order online you can use the site to check if they have something in stock. I usually do this and then just rock up and ask for it. It sometimes takes a day or two for them to respond to the online orders (cause they’re busy dealing with stupid questions).

My vote is for either GeminiTech (Also known as IJK in Fyshwick) or AB&T computers in Phillip
The former is pretty much direct competition for MSY and the latter is a performance computer shop.
Over the last few years, I’ve had dealings with the following shops:
– ATM Computers, Belconnen. Good service and a fair price. Not the cheapest you’ll find, especially if you check against online shops, but knowledgeable and helpful.
– The PC Pro, Fyshwick. Bought my last system through them in component form. Had some problems with the motherboard recognising other components; they looked at it, found the error, and replaced it without question.
– MSY, Fyshwick. Probably the cheapest store in Canberra, as they sell at their online price. Service can be slow, but the guys in there are pretty switched on.
MSY on Collie st in Fyshwick, their prices are about the lowest..Even beat on-line pricing for NetGear routers and HDMI cabling- they were the cheapest. Service wasn’t too bad..
MSY is cheap, but take reading material–you’re going to be there for a while.
PC Upgrades in Queanbeyan, seemed to be quite knowledgeable and obviously enjoy their work.
Many years ago I worked at a computer shop called ATM Computers on Oatley Court Belconnen. We were always very honest and customer focussed. Prices are as low as we could reasonably set them.
It’s still going and still run by the same folk so check them out.

Good prices as MSY, but expect to wait until the staff feel like serving you and then begrudglingly.
MSY was a lot more fun when you could wander around the shelves picking out what you wanted yourself. Waiting to be served and then explaining what you want if you don’t know the exact part is not. However, the bloke who’s there most often is very helpful, they just need to clone several more of him.

Maybe try a dedicated computer shop rather than a large mult-national chain store staffed by dissinterested teenagers. Or find a friend that is knowledgeable in all things computing and ask them to go shopping with you.
Pretty much that.
Everyone and then you’ll find someone working at JB’s or HN that really know what they are talking about. There are some people out there with a passion for IT (I know right) but you’re much better off asking a techy friend to give you some advice (Keeping in mind that this can be fraught with danger too).
If there is a beer and buger in it for me I’m usually pretty happy to give people a bit of a hand, with any luck you know someone like that too.

MSY in Fyshwick. Nothing cheaper. But you need to know what you want before you go.
