The ACT region is home to many remarkable professional artists and, according to Ausdance ACT, this region has more dance schools and dancers-in-training per capita than anywhere in Australia.

The not-for-profit company, Music Theatre Projects, developed the PATH program to support these young artists, who aspire to professional careers in the future. (PATH stands for Performing After Training Hard!!)

Newsies Jnr is the first production from Music Theatre Projects’ PATH program, and is jampacked with unforgettable characters, wonderful songs, sharp choreography and staging, delivered by a cast of incredibly dedicated young performers.

The creatives behind this production of Newsies Jnr have decades of local, national and international professional experience behind them. We’ve also engaged a young artist. Jamie Rogers trained at Jayz Dance, Pialligo, prior to his professional debut aged 12 as Billy Elliot in the Australian touring production. Now all of 18, he will anchor Newsies Jnr in the central role of Jack Kelly.

Newsies started life as a Disney feature film in 1992, directed by Kenny Ortega, loosely based on the New York City newsboys’ strike of 1899. It featured twelve original songs by Alan Menken with lyrics by Jack Feldman. It became a cult classic and was adapted into a smash hit Broadway stage musical with book by Harvey Fierstein. Nominated for eight Tony Awards, it won two, including Best Original Score for Menken and Feldman.

Music Theatre Projects are grateful to the support of The Street Theatre in realising this production and thank the ACT Government through ArtsACT for supporting Jamie Roger’s role on the production.

These performances of DISNEY’S NEWSIES JR (Royalty Bearing) are licensed exclusively by Music Theatre International (Australasia).
