There’s a new reason to step inside one of Canberra’s most storied hotels – and this time, it’s not just for the luxury accommodation or high tea.

Hyatt Hotel Canberra has unveiled a gallery space in its historic Howard’s Lounge, opening the doors to creativity and conversation.

In partnership with Canberra Art Gallery, the hotel will host rotating exhibitions each quarter. Guests and visitors can expect world-class works displayed in an intimate, sophisticated setting designed to inspire conversation as much as admiration.

The first exhibition features the bold and captivating works of contemporary Australian artist Rowdy Warren.

Known for his fearless approach and striking visual storytelling, Warren’s pieces will set the tone for an ongoing program that promises to enrich Canberra’s cultural fabric.

Rowdy is a multidisciplinary artist whose work embodies bold vision, instinct and authenticity.

Rowdy rose to prominence through Adelaide’s punk scene, designing band posters and launching a streetwear label that honed his skills in design and presentation.

A pivotal connection with Indigenous artists deepened his understanding of cultural storytelling and the Australian landscape, shaping a unique visual language.

His latest works, Wildflowers, also exhibited at the Canberra Art Gallery during Floriade, showcase this evolution through vibrant, floral-inspired works that celebrate nature’s beauty and resilience.

The transformation of Howard’s Lounge reflects a broader vision for the Park Hyatt brand, which has long been associated with art and design.

Park Hyatt Canberra general manager Shane Jolly said the inspiration for the repurposing of Howard’s Lounge was to deepen the hotel’s connection with the arts, specifically as a place proud to represent Australian artists.

“We also want to provide our guests with inspiration and an experience of our cultural fabric, whether they are Australian or from abroad,” Shane said.

The exhibition lounge is just one element of the hotel’s artistic transformation. Guests dining at The Promenade Café will notice celebrated artworks on display, while the Palm Courtyard will soon feature sculptural pieces curated by Canberra Art Gallery.

“Together, the installations position the hotel not just as a place of hospitality but as a cultural destination in its own right,” Shane said.

Shane said the project was also about deepening the hotel’s relationship with the community.

“Our hotel has always been a showcase of elegance and history,” he said.

“By opening our doors as a platform for art, we’re deepening our connection to Canberra’s creative community and providing an inspiring experience for local, domestic and international visitors alike.

“Our guests and visitors are telling us they love the new space and the activation of The Promenade Café. The representation of the Rowdy Warren exhibition is incredibly beautiful, vibrant and moving.

“We are honoured to begin this journey in collaboration with Canberra Art Gallery featuring Rowdy Warren’s powerful work.”

Howard’s Lounge exhibitions will refresh quarterly, ensuring regular reasons for guests and locals to return. From internationally recognised names to rising stars, the program aims to celebrate the breadth of Australian artistic talent.
