A stolen car was allegedly seen speeding through a school zone in Canberra before police found it and saw two children sitting in the back seat of the vehicle.
ACT Policing received a call from a member of the public at midday on Tuesday (23 September) to say a black Mercedes sedan had been seen speeding through a school zone, a police spokesperson said.
Police soon found the Mercedes parked in a carport in Weston and allegedly saw a man and a woman leaving the vehicle.
“Two children were also located in the rear seat of the Mercedes,” the police spokesperson said.
Checks confirmed the car had been reported as stolen from a home in Forrest earlier this month and it was seized for a forensic examination.
The two adults were arrested.
The man allegedly returned a positive result to a drug test, while the woman was allegedly found with items believed to be stolen, including car keys, jewellery, mobile phones and watches.
The police spokesperson said the two children were placed in emergency care.
The 45-year-old man was charged with driving a vehicle without consent and applied for bail in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday (24 September), which the prosecutor opposed.
The woman, 48, was charged with riding in a vehicle without consent and possessing stolen property and also faced the Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where she was seen sobbing, to apply for bail, which was not opposed.
Magistrate Glenn Theakston granted bail for both of them on conditions and adjourned their matters to 23 October.
The man and woman have not been named to avoid identifying the children.
