A Harden service station has attracted drivers from all across the Riverina and even Canberra with some of the lowest fuel prices in the country.

At Ultra Harden, drivers can fill up on E10 for just $1.21 a litre, nearly 70 cents cheaper than in the nation’s capital.

In Canberra, the average fuel price is $1.86, while in Wagga, the cheapest E10 sits around $1.69, and in Griffith, it ranges between $1.78 and $1.80.

While the prices may seem insane, Ultra service manager Harry Singh said they were set to stay for at least the next fortnight, as people from as far as Canberra were making the trip for the discounts.

“It’s a promotion for our head company to bring people out to Harden,” he said.

“We want to reach as many people as we possibly can out here. People are travelling nearly 100 kilometres from Young and Canberra to fill up.

“We’ve been really busy since the prices were set. We haven’t confirmed when or if the prices will change, but we expect them to last until around 13 October.”

The extremely low fuel price has been set to coincide with the popular Harden Kite Festival, taking place on 11 October.

Mr Singh said he expected hundreds of customers to come through the station’s doors over the next two weeks to take advantage of the special offer.

“We’ve only had these prices for a little bit of time and it’s already been terrific. So many people have come, and it’s been busy all day.”

A person in Harden filling up an average 45-litre tank on E10 can expect to save $29.25; meanwhile, compared with Wagga, the difference is about $21.

Wagga resident Jack Stock, who learnt about the prices on Monday morning, said the drive to Harden was well worth the effort.

“I already like the drive to Harden, it’s a great town, but for $30 less on fuel, you’ll catch me out there several days a week, I reckon.”

At the time of writing, fuel prices at Ultra Harden are $1.21 for E10, $1.22 for ULP 91, $1.46 for 98 RON and $1.36 for diesel.

Get some empty containers and take a lot back with you! I know it’s dangerous and probably illegal!

Okay, I’m sorry to be “that guy” but this article is nonsense. I had to look up Harden and it’s miles away, 1hr 38min drive from Canberra. It’s a dumb idea to drive all that way to fill up on cheap petrol and then burn it by driving back home.

Yes completely agree having driven the trip many times it’s about 125km and an average car will burn say 8L per 100km. So you’re looking at about 20L for the round trip, or about $25 worth of petrol all to save $30 on a full tank.

Then again if you had a Landcruiser Prado with a 150L tank, slightly higher consumption at say 9-10L/100 so $35 of Diesel and a saving of about $80 per tank.

Is a $40 net saving worth 3 hours of your time?

All that said, the Kite Festival is great and I highly encourage everyone to attend.

This is one of those articles that will make me ask “where’s Harden?” and most Canberrans would respond with “I dunno!”

What I’m reading from this is that we again or still are being ripped off in canberra. Even cooma has been 20 to 30 cents cheaper than canberra.

The fuel prices in Cooma make a mockery of the excuses that fuel companies make for Canberra’s fuel prices.

Usually it’s “less competition in Canberra” Cooma has more competition? or “transport/delivery costs” Would not every single litre of fuel going to Cooma travel directly through Canberra before being shipped that extra 100 or so Km?

They must think we came down in the last shower.

I will only ever fill my car up in Queanbeyan. I have found that during the week there can be a price difference of up to 30 cents when compared with my local.

do people seriously think that a drive out to Harden to save money on fuel, will actually be saving them money when they will be using fuel to drive there?

It’s to encourage people to Visit Harden. You visit and get Petrol while you’re there. I was there 2 weeks ago with an overseas visitor looking at the canola fields. Would have got petrol while I was there if that deal was on.

LOL I know, right!? It was a dumb comment in the article. Not realistic.

That’s fair enough but the idea of driving from Canberra to Harden JUST to get cheap petrol is stupid.
