Discover the history and cultural significance of the Ginninderra Reed Necklace at The Link with Maree Clarke & Catherine Palmer.

In 1862, a group of Aboriginal girls who grew up near Old Ginninderra carefully crafted a delicate necklace of reeds as a wedding gift for Emma Minnie Palmer, as a gesture of connection and friendship. The reed necklace has been carefully kept in the family and passed onto her great great Granddaughter, Catherine Palmer.

More than 160 years later, this remarkable piece – the Ginninderra Reed Necklace – has returned to Canberra on loan, becoming the centrepiece of an exhibition exploring memory, resilience and cultural survival at the Canberra Museum and Gallery.

Now, you’re invited to go deeper.

Join Catherine Palmer and pioneering Yorta Yorta/Wamba Wamba/Mutti Mutti/Boonwurrung artist and curator, Maree Clarke – a leading figure in contemporary First Nations art – for an intimate conversation about the necklace, its meaning, and the way her practice brings attention to what is so often unseen. Through her work, Clarke reminds us that even the smallest of objects can hold profound stories that shape our understanding of who we are, and who we might become.
