Section of Monaro Highway to close for final works

The final concrete girders are now in place on the new Monaro Highway flyover as the construction crew prepares to temporarily close a southbound portion of the highway in mid-November.

The ACT Government advises that the southbound side of the Monaro Highway – between the Hindmarsh Drive and Lanyon Drive intersections – will close between 7 pm on Friday, 14 November, and 5 am, Monday, 17 November, to allow for the “reconstruction of pavement” along that section.

“During the closure, there will be detours in place,” the government said.

“Road users are reminded to follow all signage and directions from traffic controllers, and to be aware that reduced speed limits apply throughout the project site.”

Construction contractor Wodens celebrated the placement of the enormous girders as a “major milestone”.

Next steps include pouring the flyover’s support deck, installing the precast parapets and railings and, finally, paving the road.

“This marks a significant step forward in improving connectivity and safety for the region,” the contractor said.

Construction of the flyover and interchange at the Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive intersection is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The Australian and ACT governments jointly fund the Monaro Highway upgrade to the tune of $230 million all up (including previous “safety improvements” to a section between Old Cooma Road and Williamsdale Road in 2020).

The ACT Government says it’s designed to “improve safety, freight efficiency and faster and smoother travel” along the corridor.

The next package of works is still pending approval, but includes a roundabout at the intersection of the new Monaro Highway southbound off-ramp and David Warren Road extension.

The intersection of Lanyon Drive and Sheppard Street will also be redesigned to include a direct connection to the David Warren Road extension and the highway’s southbound off-ramp, while traffic lights will be removed at the Alexander Maconochie Centre intersection (David Warren Road).

Looking ahead, and further south along the Monaro Highway, the government is considering connecting Mugga Lane and Tralee Street in Hume with another new flyover.

This could come with changes to the Mugga Lane and John Cory Road roundabout, with a new northbound ramp onto the highway likely.

The Sheppard Street intersection may also be modified to allow left-in and left-out movements only for Hume, while several streets within Hume itself would also be upgraded.

Meanwhile, Isabella Drive would be extended over the highway with a new flyover, ending at a new roundabout on Tralee Street, while new on and off-ramps would still allow traffic to enter and exit Isabella Drive from the highway.

Where’s all the angry comments somehow blaming this on the light rail? Or are we allowed to invest in big infrastructure projects like this as long as they’re only for cars?
