Will light rail stage 2B extend to Mawson? We won't know for at least another three years

The ACT Government will decide whether light rail stage 2B will extend to Mawson when it finalises its business case in 2028/29.

Transport Minister Chris Steel previously explained that stage 2 had been split into stages 2A and 2B due to the different environmental approvals that would be needed (given that stage 2B goes through Commonwealth land).

During annual reports hearings on Tuesday (18 November), he revealed that some early consideration works to extend light rail stage 2B all the way to Mawson had already been done.

“It’s unlikely there will be the same level of environmental risk with a future extension down to Mawson, and so it hasn’t been included in the [draft] EIS for stage 2B,” Mr Steel said.

“But it would still be considered in a business case in 28/29 about whether the government would want to take up the option of going down to Mawson.

“There will be a decision in the business case to make about whether the scope of the project includes [an extension to Mawson].”

Four alignments for a route to Mawson have been mapped out on the ACT Government’s light rail to Woden website.

One suggests an ‘eastern verge alignment’ on Athllon Drive, which terminates at Beasley Street, while the second and third see the route dog-leg off Athllon Drive onto either Mawson Place or a space between Athllon Drive and Mawson Place. The fourth suggested route would have an alignment down Athllon Drive’s median strip to terminate at Beasley Street South.

Infrastructure Canberra transport and civil executive group manager Anthony Haraldson told the hearings the directorate had done “quite a bit of work” on the Mawson extension’s design, but more would be needed before a final decision is made.

It would also be beholden to budgetary decisions and whichever party is in government when the business case is submitted (if that occurs on time).

Mr Steel said an extension to Mawson “notionally” had some benefits.

“It doesn’t have the same sort of constraints that we’ve seen on the earlier part of the route down Adelaide Avenue,” he said.

“But it would have its own issues that would need to be considered around flooding, water-sensitive urban design … and [it would have] its own cost.”

The 2020/21 ACT Budget contained $1.3 million to assess the feasibility of extending the line from Woden to Mawson.

The ACT Greens have previously advocated for an extension of the light rail to Mawson to be guaranteed in stage 2B, expressing concerns that residents would otherwise have to wait for work to start on the Woden to Tuggeranong stage.

Regardless, work is also being done as part of the Woden Bus Interchange project to prepare for future light rail extensions in Canberra’s south.

The project has been delayed, with Mr Steel previously stating the relocation of utilities had been a major issue to overcome.

Infrastructure Canberra health, education and justice executive group manager Hayley Bell told the hearings that future-proofing initiatives had also held up the project.

“Hopefully [this work now] will avoid disruption in the future when those infrastructure assets are required,” she said.

Future-proofing includes electrical conduits to support the commissioning of light rail, along with improved water and sewer systems to accommodate Woden’s growing population.

The new Woden Public Transport Interchange is now expected to be operational at the end of March 2026.

A criminal misuse of our rates and taxes!

wouldn’t that be sage 3A or 3B depending on if they did Weston creek first or second.

Make it elevated run it like the sydney monorail from building to building. Surely developers would fund the cost of new stations if they could build apartments on top of them.

This is the transport equivalent of a political commitment to net zero by 2050.

Why has it taken so long to come up with a business plan?
Just…….. words fail me.

The idea that Light Rail will eventually be extended to Tuggeranong with a travel time to Civic of over an hour defies logic.

I can’t see the government committing to take 2B through to Mawson, because having gone past Woden, it pretty much commits them to continuing to Tuggeranong.

There isn’t any real enthusiasm from Tuggeranong residents for LR, due to the extra travel time it’ll cause, and let’s face it even duplicating Athllon Drive has hardly been a priority for the government!

There is however, plenty of self-interest groups pushing for the next leg to be Belco thru to Fyshwick (and connecting to the train at Kingston), and politics being politics, that’s were LR will go after Woden.

The government expects light rail stage 2 to take at least 50% longer than buses to get between Woden and Civic, to cut network-wide public transport travel by 5%, and to cost another $billion.
How much more money should we spend to drive people away from public transport?
To avoid being banned for the fifth time from the the Conservation Council’s premises, I disclose that my views do not necessarily represent those the Conservation Council.

Isn’t it going to Cooma?

Absolutely crazy to think that the ALP promised light rail in the 2012 election and each one since, and we still have no idea where the blasted thing is meant to go.

Far-flung parts of the Territory- from Phillip, to the Airport, to Kippax – have been promised light rail one day. Yet we are selling off land at all those sites, and along potential routes, without any idea of the possible light rail routes.

My complaint about the ACT Govt’s ineptitude isn’t about whether one is pro or anti light rail. The entire governance of the ACT’s light rail is a complete joke.

So wasteful.

Steel needs to be investigated.

Let’s watch them complete the Athllon Drive duplication without LR consideration then rip it all up again when (if) they come to lay tracks.
As usual, we’ll see double handling of projects from this government because they don’t plan more than 1 day ahead.

If they don’t run it to Mawson then they can sell the park and ride car parks to Geocon as no-one will be using them anymore.

Maybe Steel can talk about the
$1 billion in yearly interest payments caused by the light rail.

I’ve heard people in Tuggeranong complain “it will never reach here” and I reckon they’re right. If it’s such a bother and taking so long just to reach Woden I highly doubt the LR will go any further. To think this is supposed to be the nations capital…

Why stop at Mawson when Cooma awaits ?

Dunno, why don’t you ask the NSW Government as Cooma is in NSW.
