The hero of Bondi’s mass shooting, 43-year-old Ahmed Al-Ahmed, who tackled one of the gunmen and singlehandedly took away his gun, has had some high-level thanks and visitors to his hospital room.

Mr Al-Ahmed suffered serious injury himself during the episode when shot twice by the second gunman, and remains in a critical but stable condition at St George Hospital in Sydney.

NSW Premier Chris Minns has praised him as a hero and credited Mr Al-Ahmed with saving many lives with his bravery.

While the Premier was one of the first to visit Mr Al-Ahmed in hospital on Monday (15 November), the quiet, unassuming hero has since had a drop in from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as well as Governor-General Sam Mostyn who passed on a message from the King.

Mr Albanese thanked Mr Al-Ahmed for his heroism and said it was a “great honour” to meet him.

“He is a true Australian hero. He’s very humble. He went through his thought processes as he saw the atrocities unfold,” the Prime Minister told journalists after the visit.

“He had gone to Bondi with friends and relatives. He was trying to get a cup of coffee, simple as that, and found himself at a moment where people were being shot in front of him.

“He decided to take action, and his bravery is an inspiration for all Australians. He is a very humble man.

“Tomorrow he will undergo further surgery. His mother and father are here visiting him from Syria, and I was able to meet them as well. They’re very proud parents.

“He, at a moment where we have seen evil perpetrated, he shines out as an example of the strength of humanity.

“We are a brave country. Ahmed Al-Ahmed represents the best of our country.

“We will not allow this country to be divided. That is what the terrorists seek. We will unite, we will embrace each other and we’ll get through this.”

The Governor-General said she expected to be awarding Mr Al-Ahmed a bravery award for his actions on Sunday.

Ms Mostyn passed on the thanks of King Charles, who described Mr Al-Ahmed’s actions as “absolute heroics”.

“Ahmed was the very best in that moment and has shown us what courage and bravery looks like, and has acted completely selflessly,” the Governor-General said.

“It would be staggering that he wouldn’t be receiving some form of bravery award…

“I think he’s been nominated many, many times already and in the context of what we saw, of course he is a brave man who has done something truly heroic.”

Mr Al-Ahmed, a Muslim, is a tobacconist shopkeeper and father of two young girls.

His family filmed a short video at his bedside in which he gives his thanks to the millions of Australian well-wishers.

Meanwhile, Mr Albanese’s promise to tighten gun laws in the wake of the massacre has received some criticism from one of his predecessors, who took similar action.

Former Liberal Prime Minister John Howard, who massively overhauled gun laws following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, said the latest move should not distract from the fact that the current Labor government has not done enough to tackle antisemitism.

Mr Howard supported any move to further tighten gun laws, and he stressed that the only ones to blame for the Bondi shootings were the murderers themselves, but he added that Mr Albanese had been found lacking.

“I do not want this debate post this horrible event to be … used as a pretext to avoid the broader debate about the spread of hatred of Jewish people and antisemitism,” Mr Howard said.

“If the Prime Minister, immediately after the attack of the 7th of October 2023, had called an all-points cymbals and drums national press conference, convened a meeting of the national cabinet – he could have done that – and had that on the day after the attack, you would not have had that obscene demonstration at the Opera House.

“From the beginning, people of the Jewish community would have felt there is somebody on their side. He didn’t do that.”

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has also criticised the government over antisemitism and has not yet endorsed the Prime Minister to change gun laws.

But Mr Albanese said he wanted Australians to work together.

“This is not a time for politics, it is a time for national unity. I think we have organised for the Leader of the Opposition to receive a briefing from the security agencies yesterday,” the Prime Minister said.

“I think her statement on Sunday night was entirely appropriate and we stand ready to work across the parliament.”

I have my money on this father/son team’s act of atrocity as a response to the many deaths of Palestinians in Gaza. The state of Israel as a part secular state for Jewish people is a beacon for all Jewish people throughout the world. You might say their Mecca. It might be concluded their distorted motive to retaliate on Israel, so far distant from Australia, was to attack those celebrating an important Jewish day. Any changes to our gun laws will never stop any lone wolf attacker from their target.

Capital Retro5:06 pm 17 Dec 25

Nice try David but the people responsible for the Bondi pogrom were hating Jews may years ago, well before the alleged but unproven atrocities carried out by Israel in Gaza.

How many of the 70,000 Palestinian deaths are unproven atrocities ? Is that 40,000 or maybe 50,000 or perhaps 10,000.

Question is, how soon before israel double taps one of our hospitals? Because retaliation, amI right CR?

Capital Retro7:34 am 18 Dec 25

Show me the pics of the 70,000 graves, cranky22

Wrong, they’ll wait until those nurses are as close as possible to the childrens ward. Because what’s a few more child amputees.

Capital Retro11:36 am 18 Dec 25

What are you on about, TG?

I can’t CR. The graves are all under tons of rubble caused by Israel’s bombing.
BTW 72,000+ are the UN’s figures.

John Howard should stop embarrassing himself with inane comments.
We wouldn’t have an anti semitism issue if the war criminal Netanyahu stopped murdering people.
The latest score is 2000 + dead Isrealis & 70,000+ dead Palestinians hey nothing to see there.

Antisemitism: You’re confusing the Israeli government with Australians of Jewish faith, try again.

The antisemitism issue has surely been aggravated by the conflation between zionism and judaism. Our “special” envoy to combat this issue herself conflates the two. The war criminal leading a genocide conflates the two. Regardless, it doesn’t matter what the motivation is, it doesn’t matter what group the victims or perpetrators are from. All that matters is that violence is never the answer. Never.
Any politician making any statement besides condolences and condemnation of violence is utterly despicable, right now is not the time. The bodies weren’t even cold before the blame game started, gross.

Ahmed is clearly not a Christian…he didn’t turn the other cheek. 😆 While it’s disheartening to hear of such an incident at a space where people are supposed rbe happy and have fun times, it’s heartening to hear that someone took a risk to stop it. If only more people were that brave.

Good on you Chris for calling out Albanese. Two years too late he’s called for national unity when for two years he’s blamed Israel, divided our nation, not called out anti-Semitism and upset nations who used to call us friends.

All eyes on the Prime Minister now to see if he can back up words with actions. The Segal recommendations would be a good start. Though i notice this morning while Albanese says it’s not a time for politics, his Treasurer is getting stuck into John Howard. Perhaps we’ve already got the answer.

Are you talking about the same article? Because what you’re stating and what I’ve learned through various news reports is very contradictory.

Second half of the article Karl. Not to take away from the heroics of Al-Ahmed but the anger at the government is white hot. If you’ve seen contradictory reports then they were most likely on the ABC or other anti-semitic media.

Perhaps ask yourself this – besides throwing around a few weasel words, what has this government done in the past 2 1/2 days to act ?

Penfold, step away from the spin machine and provide even one real example of where Albanese “blamed Israel”. Provide even one example of where he did anything other than condemn anti-Semitic attacks. Provide any evidence that having a different PM would have prevented this atrocity. The politicking of this tragedy is disgusting and some of the critics need to hang their heads in shame. We need national unity and dignity. In previous atrocities (such as Port Arthur and the Bali bombings) the then opposition stood firmly beside the PM of the day and did not use it as an opportunity for a cheap point scoring exercise.

Don’t worry Karl, Penfold’s comments rarely reflect anything remotely close to reality.

Don’t hold your breath. Penfold hardly ever responds to any question. He usually obfuscates, changes the subject or posts a link to a long winded article that nobody reads.

Penfold, anger might be white hot in your circles, but you can’t claim to speak for all. I know many people are disappointed that point scoring is being allowed to distract from the solemnness of the funerals. Please wait until all the innocent who died have been farewelled with dignity and all the injured are out of hospital. Then it will be time to have a good hard look at what went wrong and what warning signs were missed. (This should include when the foul people behind this atrocity started to show signs of radicalisation, back when the Coalition was in power. And no, I am not blaming the Coalition. It’s too complicated to say one side good; other side evil, but the time line involved shows having a different team in power might not have made any difference.)

megsy, there are none as blind as those who refuse to see. National unity would be great, but it’s not something Albanese and his Labor colleagues could ever deliver. Clearly you can’t see any wrongdoing by this government, though i’ve provided it on other articles.

So let’s review the Albanese failures of the Jewish community, one by one.

October 2022 – the Australian government officially reversed its recognition of West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel

October 9 2023 – the Sydney Opera House invaded by people who supported the massacre of 1,200 Jews on October 7. Government response – nothing

October 9 2023 – in the shadow of the massacre when a reeling Israel was working out how to respond – Australia’s foreign minister demanded “restraint” from Israel.

November 22 2024 – Wong supports Netanyahu arrest:

https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/wong-responds-to-netanyahus-icc-arrest-warrant-as-us-labels-move-outrageous/olo6gf9fh

September 21 2025 – Australia formally recognised the State of Palestine

But don’t take my word for it – the hardly conservative Time magazine can help you some more:

https://time.com/7340731/anti-semitism-australia-bondi-attack/

There has never been a more anti-Semitic govenment in 124 years of Australian history. Feel free megsy to counter any of these points with facts. Hint: you can’t.

Okay Penfold, I challenge you to answer even a single question posed to you. Hint: you can’t.

Btw if you read megsy’s comment properly, you would tap out of the conversation for probably the next couple months. Allow the lost to be farewelled.

No one is surprised to see you here with the political point scoring. Utterly disgusting stuff. Even for you. And your track record is bad…to put it politely.

Calling out Israel on human rights abuses is not anti-Semitism. Conflating issues proves nothing and does nothing to reduce radicalisation.

TG – sounds like you’re another who refuses to see. And like our cowardly government, hiding behind the “national unity, let’s all be friends” response well that horse bolted last Sunday. There’s been two years of warnings, two years where attacks on Jewish Australians have gone from a few hundred a year to over 2,000 per year. But you probably want proof that October 7 has lead to December 14. Head in sand stuff.

Why don’t you sit down and listen to Josh Frydenberg’s speech yesterday. Why don’t you read the moving tribute from Reuven Morrison’s daughter. Chances of it sinking in aren’t promising, but maybe give it a try.

One thing is very clear though – megsy is a long, long way from understanding the issues. Perhaps some extended reading about October 7 2023 would help.

Capital Retro7:32 am 18 Dec 25

This might help you understand what Penfold is trying to say, megsy:

“In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Albanese was an outspoken advocate for the Palestinian cause, giving pro-Palestinian speeches in Parliament and attending protests. A trip to Gaza and the Palestinian territories in 1998 deeply affected him, solidifying his views on the need for a just resolution.”

Penfold, my understanding of the issue is it is lot more than Oct 7. Don’t forget, some of the criticism of Bibi is coming from Jews within Israel. Some of the people joining the protest actions in Australia against the Israeli government included members of the Jewish community – are you saying they are anti-Semitic?

Those who commit murder and other atrocities should be punished heavily, regardless of who is the perpetrator and who is the victim. Those who abuse human rights should be called out, regardless of the religion of either the perpetrator or the victim. To do otherwise, gives easy propaganda material to the foul creatures who recruit and train extremists.

The majority of both Muslims and Jews are lovely, decent people and they should be able to practice their religion and live their lives without fear. One of the best ways a achieving that is insistence on equal application of the rule of law for everyone, regardless of their religion. Nobody should be allowed to use their religion to claim exemption from accountability.

Yes CR, those views haven’t aged well. He’s now a persona non grata in the Jewish community. Banned from attending funerals.

“He has betrayed the Jewish people of Australia, and of the whole world,” Michael (Matilda’s father) said.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15393979/Anthony-Albanese-matilda-bondi-beach-shooting.html

Look how giddy Pengold is getting using this tragedy to push his partisan political views.

Absolutely disgraceful, but we’ve become accustomed to expect nothing less.

CR – exactly how does Albanese’s views there is a “need for a just resolution” (your words) prove he is anti-Semitic or in anyway personally responsible to the Bondi atrocity? Explain it to me like I was a child?

megsy – since you refuse to listen to common sense, perhaps listen to Jewish Australians:

“Albanese has failed my daughter and failed every victim of the tragedy, and had they done more, this would not have happened.”

“It is time for him to accept personal responsibility for the death of 15 innocent people, including a 10-year-old child. It is time our prime minister accepted accountability for what has happened here. And it’s time our leaders stood up and led at last.”

“Your government has failed us. You sit in a chair. It is time you earned that title. If you don’t want to do the job, give it to somebody who will.”

“In a stark reminder of the strong Jewish backlash against the prime minister, Anthony Albanese was not invited to attend the Wednesday funeral of Rabbi Eli Schlanger, among the first of the Bondi massacre victims to be farewelled.”

“Anthony Albanese’s relationship with Australian Jews is now ‘broken to its core’. Not strained, not cracked, not brittle, but broken to its core.”

Further, if his motives in the “need for a just resolution” is confusing, look at his actions in supporting the ICC move, recognising Palestine, moving the recogised capital, ignoring the synagogue attacks and weekly protests, not acting on universities becoming hotbeds of anti-semitism.

And then ask yourself one simple question – is there an example of him doing anything to support Israel and punish anti-semitic behaviour at the same time ?

5 quotes from understandably upset people in grief. None of them answer megsy’s question. Very convincing stuff mate…just another day for you though.
Penfold – outraged by everything, ashamed of nothing.

Penfold, you still haven’t explain how Albanese is personally responsible. Using the words of a man in deep grief and in shock proves nothing. I lost a brother in horrific circumstances and what I was saying on the day of his funeral reflected my anger and grief and was not a considered assessment of the full picture. If anybody had tried to use my grief to score political points, then they should be ashamed. Let the families grieve (even make statements of blame if that helps them) but that will not provide a long term solution to their safety.

What happened needs to be examined away from the grief and by looking at all the facts. Why did the case on this family get closed back in 2019? Was it because the then government relied too much on stereotypes, rather than genuine assessment. Was it because they were Indian Muslims and not Middle Eastern and thus not fitting lazy profiling?

megsy – i’ve never claimed Albanese is personally responsible for the shootings. There’s only two people that are, thankfully neither will ever have the chance again.

But he is personally responsible for the failures of him and his government and the culture he’s helped ingrain. How many repeated warnings he’s had to address anti-semitism are beyond count now. If you need that further explained in light of everything written to date well perhaps no amount of reading will help you see the realities. Or, as seems likely, you don’t want to. At least the latter would make sense.

Capital Retro4:58 pm 18 Dec 25

Those words were Albanese’s words, not mine.

The “just resolution” was his desire and that was recognizing Palestine and having it co-exist separately alongside Israel. Considering this solution has been previously rejected by Palestine because they want the land Israel occupies (from the river to the sea) Albanese is anti-Semitic – for goodness sake he and Wong have been openly pro-Palestine for years.

You really are a child if you don’t know the history of the situation so don’t waste the opportunity and research: “What do Palestinian parents tell them to do when they grow up”.

Report your findings back to me.

Capital Retro5:03 pm 18 Dec 25

Next thing megsy you will be saying that HAMAS are a humanitarian, family orientated group.
