UPDATE, 11:35 am – ACT Policing has confirmed the woman killed in a single-vehicle crash in O’Malley was the passenger of the car involved.
Detective Inspector Elizabeth Swain said police had received “numerous” calls to Triple Zero in relation to the crash.
“At the time of the collision, a number of members of the public stopped to help the driver and the passenger, and have provided police with a number of accounts of what has happened,” she said.
“These instances are distressing for everyone involved … that’s why it’s so impressive that people stopped to help in these circumstances.”
Det Insp Swain would not disclose further details about the injuries sustained by the driver, just that he was taken to Canberra Hospital.
The man and woman were known to each other.
Given more motorists are expected to be travelling this Australia Day long weekend, as well as returning from summer holidays, Det Insp Swain urged everyone to watch their speed, fatigue, distractions and possible impairments such as alcohol and drugs.
“Do everything that you can to keep yourself and everyone safe on the roads,” she said.
“It’s tragic that we’ve [already] had three deaths in January, and [ACT Policing] will do everything that we can … to try and prevent anymore fatalities in the ACT.”
