Police allege a knife-wielding man was arrested after he tried but failed to carjack a driver in Canberra because he was unable to start the vehicle.

An ACT Policing spokesperson alleged multiple people saw a man try to steal a car by threatening its driver at knife-point on Monday afternoon (26 January).

But his alleged attempted robbery failed because he couldn’t start the vehicle.

Police were called to Kingsford Smith Drive in Melba that same afternoon after receiving reports of a man brandishing a large knife.

Officers found a man who allegedly fled on foot. But after a short chase, he reportedly dropped the knife he was carrying and was arrested.

Nathaniel Coulter, a 24-year-old from Latham, was handed charges over both allegations.

These include attempted aggravated robbery and possessing an offensive weapon with intent.

Coulter was scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday (27 January), but his lawyer, Damian Lloveda of the Aboriginal Legal Service, said he was in hospital and would appear by phone.

Mr Lloveda said his client would not apply for bail, and Special Magistrate Sean Richter remanded him in custody to face court again on 10 February.
