On the week he was scheduled to face a two-month jury trial, a man instead pleaded guilty to murdering his partner more than three years ago.

Police previously said Adam James Britt called paramedics to the Reid apartment he shared with 36-year-old Tiffany Marie Spence on 9 September 2022.

She had allegedly suffered several injuries to her body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Britt was arrested five months later. He was refused bail before he was committed for trial in 2023.

The matter took years to progress before a trial was scheduled to begin in the ACT Supreme Court this week and was expected to run for about two months.

But on Tuesday (3 February), the now-40-year-old Britt instead faced the courtroom and pleaded guilty to one count of murder.

Through his plea, he admitted murdering Ms Spence on or about 9 September 2022.

The ACT Director of Public Prosecutions, Victoria Engel SC, said the statement of facts for the matter had mostly been agreed, except for one paragraph, which would be resolved in the next few weeks.

Chief Justice Lucy McCallum set the sentencing hearing for 15 June.

“Thank you all for what must have been considerable work in exercising your expertise in achieving this outcome,” she told the lawyers before leaving the room.

Britt remains in custody.
