The ACT Gridiron junior season got under way today with 3 big wins.

In the first game, the Tuggeranong Tordanoes beat the Gladiators 32-12.

It was a close game with the end scoreline not telling the whole story. A few length of the field touchdowns inevitably sealed the win for the Tornadoes although the Gladiators hung in and kept it a mostly even affair.

The second game was between the Gungahlin Wildcats and the University of Canberra Firebirds, with the Wildcats winning 42-2.

Against a mostly rookie Firebirds team, the Wildcats dominated possession which lead to a host of points. It was a one sided game, with the Firebirds only points coming from a botched Wildcats snap, the ball was snapped too high and landed in the end zone, which resulted in a safety.

The third game between the newly formed club, the Spears, and the reigning champions, the Centurions, was the match of the round.

In a very close game which came down to the final seconds, the Spears managed to scrape a maiden victory, winning 22-14.

The Spears took an early lead in the first half, with their quarterback for throwing 3 touchdowns. However, the second half belonged to the Centurions who scored 2 touchdowns.

With the lead and less than a minute on the clock the Spears looked to have sealed the win but a wayward pass was intercepted by the Centurions, giving them possession.

The Centurions marched the ball up to the Spears’ goal line, but with 4 seconds left in the game, the Spears stopped the Centurions from scoring which potentially could have tied the game.

The table stands as follows:

Spears, Wildcats and Tornadoes: 2 points

Centurions, Firebirds and Gladiators: 0 points
