The good thing about rates (and there’s the beginning of a sentence you don’t hear, ever) is that you can pay weekly by direct debit and still get the 3% discount. Wish rego did that!

And to tim_c, when you often have less than $100 to spare a week, budgeting for rego often gets put on the back burner, until the bill turns up. So enjoy gloating about me subsidising yours, while I struggle to find the $250 let alone a years worth. Good for you.

Not true. At the end of 1997 all state taxes on fuel (also alcohol and tobacco) were found to be unconstitutional. The federal government immediately instituted replacement taxes, at the rate of the highest state tax for that product. The revenue raised all went back to the states. The states then had the option of whether to accept all the revenue or put in a subsidy to refund the difference at the point of sale.

Some of this was streamlined by “A New Taxation System” a few years later.

Queensland for example didn’t have a petrol tax before 1997, so they elected to refund the 8.1cpl equivalent of the federal tax increase automatically, via a fuel subsidy, which was eventually abolished in 2009 when their state government really needed the cash.

But the point is that any fuel taxes introduced earlier in 1997 didn’t even exist at the end of 1997, let alone today.

$100 discount compared to paying for four lots of 3 month renewals – as a lot of low income & financially stressed Canberrans do over the course of a year.

So we have a Government that recently introduced changes at the behest of their Greens partner to make the payment – or avoidance – of (optional) traffic fines and penalties easier on “social justice” grounds (http://region.com.au/canberra-gets-new-fine-payment-system/105118), yet remains happy to trouser this impost on (mandatory) registrations across a larger number of people who struggle to financially keep their car on the roads.

Nice.

I just think of it as a tax on those incapable of budgeting. I’m more than happy to be subsidised a little by such people.

I think we all know that anything to help save The Environment should never be costed or held to account in terms of effectiveness.
