We can and should make every effort to right wrongs and injustices done to individuals or groups, but that’s respect for the principles of justice. People have to earn respect, it’s not something that’s just due to them.

And just in case you’re tempted – I have no idea who those people are or what they did. It’s entirely possible that, if I knew, I’d respect them or their actions. But because I don’t know, I have no basis for judgement one way or the other, do I?

Well seeing as most of you seem confused about history and culture how about we keep it simple. Lets stick to the 180 odd years of culture and history in Canberra we know about. Lets call it white settlement. In that time, off the top of my head, we had the South African camp site, French nuclear testing camp site, ADEX camp site and there will be others. Agree with Pork Hunt, may I add that sometime last year I saw an interview on ABC’s 7:30 Report, where they had an interview with some prominent aboriginals, and they said that most aboriginals do NOT support those who stay at the embassy now, as relevance had been lost, and they specifically said that those who reside at the Tent embassy were “leeches”.
So would Kerehona call those elders racist too? 🙂

How on earth does the Aboriginal tent embassy represent pride?
Are they proud to live in a shanty town that is barely tolerated by the authorities ?
Others may wish to comment on who the ‘authorities’ are.
Peoples of the Commonwealth have High Commissions as opposed to Embassies in Australia. I can only conclude that Aboriginals are not part of the Commonwealth.
There have been a number of blues between different groups on site, so hardly uniting.

The local Ngunnawal people don’t support the embassy either – From 2002 – “Local Ngunnawal tribe elders walked onto the grounds in front of the Old Parliament House around midday, put out a symbolic fire kept burning by the protesters and began tearing down the tents and makeshift huts that made up the site. No it isn’t. It is a misconception that Embassies are the soverign territory of the sending state. Not true. Actually there is a good QI episode where they discuss that…can’t remember which one. Vienna Convention (etc etc) rules state something along the lines of the receiving states’ police and other services cannot enter without approval from the sending state. Sometimes that request could take a long time to be transmitted if it was a dictator fleeing from an angry mob to a friendly embassy! 🙂 But other times the Embassy staff could say to the police “come on in and remove these tent-placing dickheads immediately”.

It’ll be interesting to find out if the people who were mugged were tourists or just walking by, or involved in some way with the squatters. There’s been reports of threatening behaviour by the squatters there over the years. How I wish the government would stop this bending over backwards crap and kick them out.
