An alleged gang-bashing outside a Civic nightclub is said to have started after one of those involved approached the victim over settling a score.
Amieki Junior Unu had approached the man outside Fiction on 23 May 2025 as he allegedly had “a score to settle” with him, the ACT Magistrates Court heard this week.
It is alleged he and several others were involved in an assault on the man, during which the victim was kicked in the stomach, punched, hit in the head and had a beer bottle swung at his face.
Unu spent 18 days in custody after his arrest before he faced the Magistrates Court on Tuesday (10 June) and applied for bail, which was opposed by the prosecution.
Prosecutor Ahmad Mufti said the assault took place despite the presence of the nightclub’s security, and he noted how Unu had a history of violent offences.
Defence lawyer Luke Vozella said his client’s only criminogenic factor was his alcohol use and the 25-year-old’s partner had taken steps to help him address his issues.
He argued that if the allegations were proven, his client’s involvement should be assessed individually from that of the others involved.
Mr Vozella said it was alleged his client was the instigator of the assault, but argued he hadn’t actually made any physical contact with the man and claimed he was “a bit-player” compared to the others. Unu allegedly kicked towards the man and missed him, he said.
He also noted his client had been so inebriated after the assault that police couldn’t interview him.
But Magistrate Ian Temby said it was not correct to call Unu a bit-player because while the others delivered the blows to the man, Unu allegedly instigated the incident, threatened him and swung a kick at him.
He said Unu had relapsed into alcohol use at the beginning of the year.
The magistrate thought the risk to the community was too high at this stage and refused bail.
After his bail was denied, Unu pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm by joint commission and the matter was adjourned for sentencing on 18 August.
While he admitted to playing a role in the assault by his plea, it was not immediately clear which allegations he had pleaded guilty to.
