An alleged serial burglar is accused of breaking into businesses in Fyshwick to steal items like cars, during which he allegedly took a vehicle that someone later used in a ram-raid.
Bradley Mark Flynn, 36, allegedly burglarised management and logistics company Dev Logistics Group, used car dealers Drive In Style and mechanic Anthony Costello Automotive over several nights last month, the ACT Magistrates Courts heard.
On 19 October, he and an unidentified person allegedly broke into the logistics company’s office before burglarising the car dealers, where they stole two cars, including a Toyota LandCruiser Prado.
He and another person then allegedly broke into the mechanics on 22 October, which is almost next door to the car yard. But while they allegedly stole car keys, they didn’t take any vehicles.
An ACT Policing spokesperson said that at about 2:30 am on 22 October, the stolen LandCruiser was allegedly used to ram the front door and windows of a cafe in Casey.
“Nothing was stolen during the incident, but the store was significantly damaged,” the spokesperson said.
“About 5:30 am that morning, the vehicle was located on fire in Jacka.”
Police searched Flynn’s home in Moncrieff, as well as his vehicle, late last month, where they allegedly found a yellow taser.
He was arrested on Tuesday (11 November) and handed charges that include four counts of burglary, three counts of joint commission theft and single counts of possessing a prohibited weapon and unlawful possession of stolen property.
He has not been accused of being involved in the Casey ram-raid himself.
Flynn faced the Magistrates Court on Wednesday (12 November), where his lawyer from Legal Aid asked for his bail to be continued as his client was already under the court’s supervision for unrelated matters.
The lawyer said his client could lose his housing if he were remanded in custody, while being remanded would also disrupt his rehabilitation and could mean he would miss the birth of his child.
Prosecutor Ahmad Mufti argued there was a strong circumstantial case against Flynn, partly as clothing found in his possession matched clothing seen on CCTV of the burglaries.
The defence lawyer argued the clothing was generic and that identification would be an issue for the prosecution.
“The strength of the prosecution case is far from clear in my mind,” Magistrate Alexandra Burt ultimately said.
However, she noted that there was some evidence of a connection between Flynn and a stolen car, while there was certainly evidence relating to some of the other charges.
“I’m concerned that the allegations are serious,” the magistrate said.
She said she would refuse bail and remanded Flynn in custody, which resulted in the latter launching into a loud and foul-mouthed outburst from the courtroom’s dock.
“This is bulls-t,” he said.
“They’ve loaded me up with charges so they can get a plea deal.”
The matter will return to court at a later date. No pleas were entered.
