I took this snap of the Manuka Oval light tower on my commute to work this morning.
There’s another tower going up today according to Andrew Barr.
Completion and first tests expected to take place in mid-January.

The AFL is not the VFL. Same game, yes—Australian Rules Football—but they are separate competitions. Just as the NRL is not the Country Rugby League. It’s pretty simple.
If you’re going to point out the differences between Union and League at least have the respect to refer to other codes correctly too.
No, Frustrated didn’t say anything about a comp, rather how aussie rules was played here first. Seems rugby and aussie rules were played very early here. The whole comp comment was a way to divert the arguement away from the facts that were being discussed.

I’ve always had a problem with using AFL in the place of Aussie Rules. AFL is the highest professional league/the national organisation and Aussie Rules is the game itself.

The main concern was the safety issue of parking on the Canberra Ave median strip. Telopea Park school ovals cannot be used for parking after rain because they will be ploughed up.
The possibility of better park & ride facilities was raised and we were promised a traffic report.
The effects of the lights can only be gauged once they are all on and tested for TV transmission.
The LDA has been trying to do a land swap with the Canberra Services Club so they can develop the site. If the amenity of the neighbouring apartments is adversely affected and not fixed any future developments may be difficult to market.
For all these reasons, just build a new stadium/sporting facilities at Bruce.

These lights are cutting edge- compared to the kilowatt wasters of the MCG and the Gabba, this will provide a more directed, and thus more efficient use of electricity and reduce a massive amount of spill.

Actually these lights were designed to meet building and lighting constraints. They are lower than your typical lights and are more directed at the field than typical stadium lighting.
I don’t like it. It looks like a giant fly swatter. Surely they could have made it prettier?

Well, to play sports you need to light the field at least 50m into the air (maybe more for cricket). And if you shone the lights directly at the field, then anyone at field level looking up gets the lights straight in their eyes.
Although I’m pretty sure that no one has thought about the issue before, perhaps you should contact the experts and let them see the error of their ways.

I did notice the bogong moths fluttering around the lights for a night game at the Narrabundah Ball Park a few weeks ago.
I wonder how this affects quality of the TV image and how they adjust for the flickering. Canberra Stadium must have this issue to manage.
