ACT Policing will officially move into its new Belconnen Police Station on the corner of Benjamin Way and Market Street this Tuesday, January 31.
Members of Belconnen Police Station will start their 7 am shift in the new purpose-built station adjacent to the Winchester Police Centre and Belconnen Markets.
Officer-in-Charge of Belconnen Police Station Sergeant Matt Corbitt said that this is a significant milestone for ACT Policing, and provides his officers with a state-of-the-art police station to best serve the Territory both now and well into the future.
“The former Belconnen Police Station on Lathlain Street has served its time, and is well past its use-by-date. The new station has been built with modern neighbourhood policing needs in mind, and the troops are very excited to be part of this new era for the Belconnen patrol zone,” Sergeant Corbitt said.
The 2800 square metre building will house more than 100 police officers and staff, and feature facilities such as a public access foyer and counter, five holding cells, incident rooms, welfare counselling, an area for victims of crime, a muster room and breath analysis area.
“As with any big move we are expecting some minor disruptions during this transition. We urge members of the public seeking non-urgent contact with members of Belconnen Police Station to contact ACT Policing’s switchboard on 6256 7777,” Sergeant Corbitt said.
Police volunteers will also be in attendance at the former and new Belconnen Police Stations to assist members of the public.
Construction of the new facility began in May 2010 with the full operational fit-out expected to be completed by March 2012.
A public open day will take place in March.
