ACT Policing has praised the general behaviour of Melbourne Cup revellers yesterday (Tuesday, November 5), with only a small number of people taken into custody.
Officers supported Thoroughbred Park security with regular patrols of the precinct yesterday, with a crowd estimated around 6,000 attending the Cup Day events.
One male was taken into custody for a breach of the peace within the Park precinct, and police are investigating an assault matter reported as occurring on an ACTION bus later.
Post-event celebrations continued into the evening, particularly around Dickson and Civic, where police arrested one male for breach of bail conditions, and two more were taken into protective custody for intoxication and disorderly (I&D) conduct.
Traffic Operations maintained a high profile presence on ACT roads throughout the day, conducting 907 roadside screening tests for alcohol, of which two resulted in positive results. The Road Safety Operations Team also conducted 31 random roadside drug tests, with nil positive results.
ACT Policing’s Operational Commander, Sergeant Jo Cameron, said that the great weather for the events at Thoroughbred Park, and the generally good behaviour of the racegoers, contributed to a safe and festive occasion enjoyed by thousands of Canberrans.
