The ACT’s bomb squad were called to southern Canberra on Monday (12 May) after the discovery of an item of explosives near a road.

Isabella Drive was closed to all traffic between the Monaro Highway and the Chisholm Village Shopping Centre at about 5 pm for a police operation, but no more details were released at the time.

Afterwards, an ACT Policing spokesperson said civil contractors had found “a small unexploded item thought to be used for land clearing along Isabella Drive” earlier in the afternoon.

“The AFP Bomb Response Team attended and deemed the item unsafe,” the spokesperson said.

“Isabella Drive was closed between Monaro Highway and Hambridge Crescent at about 5 pm while the Bomb Response Team rendered the item safe.”

Users of social media reported hearing two large booms in the area in the afternoon.

The police operation took about 40 minutes as the road was reopened at 5:40 pm.

“There is no ongoing threat to the community,” the police spokesperson said.

“ACT Policing considers this matter finalised.”
