Thieves have broken into the food van at the George Harcourt Inn after it was set up to produce free meals for disadvantaged elderly people in Canberra.
Publican at The George, Josh Leemhuis, told Region Media earlier this week how they set up the food van so the business could continue to trade in the face of all licensed venues having to shutdown.
Now, their food van has been broken into twice since it was set up, with thieves damaging equipment.
No money, food or liquor is kept on the premises.
Mr Leemhuis said it was a kick in the guts after having delivered more than 420 free meals to elderly people in need.
“Our food van has been broken into twice and equipment damaged both times,” Mr Leemhuis said via their Facebook page.
“Can you please share this to help people understand we are already down on the ground and what we need now is HELP not get kicked in the guts again!!!”
Mr Leemhuis said they will continue to provide the free meals, along with cheap and nutritious takeaway meals to the general public.
“The caravan was crucial to our survival plan as people can be safe and don’t have to enter the pub and observe social distancing procedures,” Mr Leemhuis said.
