Bushfires account for up to a third of carbon emissions in Australia each year. What does the government plan to do about this? How will carbon taxation be applied?
I’m already organising a protest on the lawns of Parliament House about this.
We’re meeting at Tilley’s for a chardy for starts, before we don the lycra and ride to APH, colourful banners at the ready.
Wanna come?
Well, at least the fire-bugs will have to wait another month before continuing their activities from last year…

I shall treat any bushfires which start before the declared date of Oct 1st, with an aloof contempt and distain, as they are no better than cheating b@st@rds.
Illegal que jumpers I call them. Taking our jobs. Won’t someone think of the children!
On a serious note, there has been plenty of minor grass fires on Canberra’s boundaries over the last few months, many of them started by on farm activities. The bushfire period is mostly about making people cease those activities (or conduct them more carefully).

The normal start of the fire season is from the start of October to the end March in SE Australia. The Commissioner of each states respective fire service has the power to adjust these dates depending on how the season is shaping up. Last year the start date was pushed back to November as the ACT had some decent rain in winter and spring. However I believe the fire season has been brought forward and declared on the 1st September around Queanbeyan, Palerang and Shoalhaven areas.
You’re right. I thought 1 November was normal, but the ABC website told me that indeed that was a late start last year.
It sucks because one of my favourite camping spots won’t allow campfires during bushfire season and who would go camping in September or October without a fire at night?
Let’s hope we make it through summer without any disastrous bushfires though. There sure is lots of fuel around.

I seem to remember the “normal” start of the bushfire season was November 1, or was that a late year??
