I spotted this in Kingston over the weekend… I wanted to get a red marker out and correct it!

Luckily, they managed to get the apostrophe right on the name of the store…

What’s clo8’s?
Perhaps it says clogs and they don’t like the Dutch?
The sign is perfect if read as an information sign. It is advising there is no food that belongs to a dog or more than one drink inside through these doors.
So if the sign isn’t saying dogs aren’t allowed to bring their food and drinks inside, is it supposed to say:
No dogs, food, or drinks inside – thank you!
Maybe they should drop the ! too………
Grammar Nazis gonna Nazi…

It’s like saying thank you but not really meaning it. See this mistake often. No idea why some people think it’s one word.
One word: illiteracy.
The Crimes today has an article that uses the adjective “commonsense” in place of the noun – and they pay people to know the difference.

I can’t see anything wrong with the sign except the “drinks” plural. The apostrophe in “dog’s” is perfectly fine as the sign would be aimed at punters who generally bring one dog. “Drinks” is a very human reference, unless this Kingston venue has a clientele who call their dogs their babies and cater accordingly!
Well I can! The apostrophe in dog’s indicates the possessive for the food, and by association, the drinks. So, what the sign is saying you cannot bring food or drinks belonging to your dog inside. One assumes from this that your own food and drinks are perfectly acceptable. Remove the apostrophe from dog’s and the sign would revert to the originally intended meaning.
Hence my post, and my reference to the sign being aimed at a (Kingston!) clientele with furkids.

A comma after dogs is necessary, to make it absolutely clear, even after the apostrophe is removed.
No dogs, food or drink inside. Thank you!

Most of the dogs I’ve met (male and female) drink either VB or Vodka Cruisers………
And “dog’s” poor form too. Seems a lot of people have a problem with correct use of abbreviation.
