Is there a wholesaler or some sort of scrapyard in Canberra where I can buy a large slab of marble (maybe 1.5 square metres), either rough or polished?
Also, does anyone know how much I might pay for such a piece?

There’s a place on Geelong Street in Fyshwick. I think it’s called ACT Marble & Granite.
Actually there are two places in Geelong Street. ACT Marble and Granite is on the right and Bono’s Granite are down a little driveway more or less opposite on the left.
Recently had Bono’s put in some Ceasarstone into my place and would highly recommend them. Price wise much cheaper than ACT Marble and gave me a much better feeling. The finished product was absolutely spot on, could not fault it. Out the back he has lots of offcuts. Clearly also does real marble too.
There is some marble for sale on allclassifieds, just search all catergories for marble. If you are using it for benchtops be a bit careful as marble is porous and stains easy (red cordial or oil stains white marble easly). Best looking for dark colours. Granite is heaps better as it is much denser.

Don’t know about scrapyards but if you’re after a tombstone, try the cemeteries. If you can’t find one with the correct name on it, you can always change your name by deed poll to suit.
On a serious note, there are at least two monumental masons in Qbn. One at the corner of Kendall and Stephens and one on Gilmore Rd.
+1 for PDA Marble in Queanbeyan – Dino, the owner, is very helpful and reasonably priced

Thanks. I realized that I could probably just try a stone supplier in Fyshwick since I’m looking for a benchtop-size piece.
PS: If anyone out there has a piece to sell, I’d be happy to take a look.
