An architectural beauty with a story to tell, 32 Coranderrk Street is a three-bedroom, three-bathroom dual-occupancy home in Reid, offering privacy, history and centrality.

Designed by architect Wal Kostyrko, the mind behind the Turkish Embassy in Yarralumla, this home has a focus on eye-catching yet quiet design and privacy.

“It’s a very private, understated home at the front, that is not truly revealed until you walk through the main foyer into the living space,” home.byholly owner Holly Komorowski says.

“It embodies the characteristics of modernist architecture not dissimilar to the work Kostyrko was designing during his time with the National Capital Development Commission (NCDC) in the 60s and 70s.

“If you look at the living room and the dining room, for example, you can see the use of carefully placed high windows and angles which draw your eye.”

These larger, more structural components of the home’s beautiful living spaces are complemented by features such as a built-in bar area in the dining area with display shelves and custom cabinetry, enhancing the home’s potential for formal entertaining and dinner parties.

This versatility extends to the kitchen, which features a built-in breakfast bar, creating an informal dining space separate from the grander dining room.

“The kitchen is a workable space, and the design thoughtfully encompasses aesthetics, practicality and versatility,” Holly says.

Bedrooms follow the same design philosophy as the rest of the home, with unique features and design choices that don’t feel overwhelming.

The main suite provides the home’s owner with a truly unique sanctuary at the end of the day. It features a built-in study nook and an ensuite that is a story in itself.

“The ensuite is simply luxurious. The amount of space here, the spa bath, the shower, the storage, the double vanities with massive mirrors, timber pillars and integrated shelving … There aren’t many spaces like this,” Holly says.

Beyond this private retreat, the home features a loft room on the second storey, with an ensuite bathroom, a kitchenette and enough room for a study or home library.

“The apartment-style loft is a very flexible room and it adds a lot to the home. A professional couple living here could work from home with a dual office, or it could be used as a private study space,” Holly says.

This flexibility, care and consideration are indicative of the fact that the architect, Wal Kostyrko, designed this home for himself.

“32 Coranderrk Street really represents the best of his work. You can really see where his talents lie and how he’s used them throughout the property to make a beautiful but reserved home,” Holly says.

All of the home’s communal spaces lead to a private, secluded courtyard, with high walls and mature, landscaped gardens featuring ferns and high grasses.

“Privacy is a central aspect of this home and the courtyard is a surprisingly large space that provides an outdoor area, while still giving the residents a sense of seclusion,” Holly says.

Positioned in the heritage-protected Inner North suburb of Reid, this property is just across the street from Glebe Park, allowing residents to easily enjoy one of Canberra’s most beautiful green spaces.

“That location, of course, also means that you can get into the city centre in less than five minutes on foot,” Holly.

“It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say this home has unparalleled access to central Canberra and the Inner North.”

Being in a heritage precinct, the next owner can be assured of the integrity of the suburb and its protection against large developments.

“This is a slice of Canberra that respects the city’s architectural history and wants to preserve it – and 32 Coranderrk Street is certainly the kind of home you want to preserve,” Holly says.
