I have survived nearly 30 years on motorcyles without loud exhausts & there are many other riders who also do not “need” them to survive. Yep, I have had near misses but every body who rides does, bikes get smeared regardless of their exhaust note. Every one of those near misses I have used my road craft to keep me out of trouble (except for the cyclist but some people tend to act like sheep & are unpredictable).

As I said this morning, travelling to work I saw the Kwaka before I heard it & it was loud. He came up so quick behind me moving in & out of the traffic flow that all it would have taken was for him to be in my blind spot & I was concentrating on something else for it all to be over, then I would have been the prick car driver. Split seconds.

Motorcycle safety has more to do with the rider than anything else.

Must be new then? I’ve heard there are only two good days when owning a Duc…… the day you get it and the day you get rid of it.

Depends what you define as new I guess. It’s a 2005 model with 13,xxxkms on it now. So not brand new, but not a museum piece either. In the time I’ve owned it, the only problem I’ve had was a worn o-ring, which resulted in a fuel leak. A fifty cent part and 5 mins of effort had it back on the road again.

The reputation is probably deserved for the old bikes, but much like Alfas (or most Italians?) the newer bikes are much better. That all said, you don’t buy a Duc for something you can set and forget. They’re for enthusiasts who don’t mind a tinker or more frequent service intervals 🙂

I slipped on one of those big white arrows on a frosty morning in Queanbeyan a few months back and ended up dropping my bike at very slow speed causing me absolutely no damage to myself at all. Even though the accident was as minor as you could possibly have on a bike two people pulled up and asked if I required assistance. One lady even offered to help me pick my bike up. I declined their offers as I was fine with only my pride hurt, but the point I am making is that I am astounded that nobody stopped to offer assistance in this instance.

I meant a collective ‘you’, as in the general community. Of course I have no idea how you in particular drive. The community, as a whole, drive fairly badly around motorcycles. Partly because we’re hard to see and partly because drivers don’t pay much attention to their surroundings to begin with. 99% (pulled out of my butt) of people drive around in a bubble.

I think we also need to acknowledge that noise is a continuous scale. My bike sounds nothing like a Harley with straight through pipes. You’ll get my agreement that they are excessive (I’m sure the sole purpose of those bikes is to turn fuel into noise). Mine is loud enough to let others, including pedestrians, know where I am & I won’t be changing that for the opinions of a wowser on an internet forum.

Besides, as Holden Caulfield alluded to – a Duc can never be too loud…. 🙂

Yes there were a lot of people who witnessed the accident, and the fact that they didn’t stop to see if the motorcyclist was ok is disgusting. I hope their consciences get the better of them and they come forward with any information they can remember. You and your toddler are not the most important things on the planet and if you believe they are then move out to a farm away from anyone else. I have never in my life found anything to complain about with any of my neighbours and I suspect that most of this persons neighbours find the most annoying noise to be the sound of their constant winging.

Fair enough 🙂 He popped out of the busy traffic, I had not noticed him before this & his light caught my attention in the mirror, not his pipes. At 100km/h on the Parkway & the radio on & could not hear his exahst until he was in front of me 😉

I hope the rider is ok. I make a point of never sitting anywhere near a cager’s blindpsot. Most drivers are pretty reasonable, but there are far too many incompetent drivers out there to take any risks. I hope they catch the a-hole responsible.

Absoloutely. Riding defensively is far more effective than anything else. I definitely notice noisy bikes when driving, but that may also be because as a rider, I’m more aware of motorcycles to begin with. As I said above, I’ve noticed a difference, but you could also argue that I’ve just been a bit lucky or I’ve become a better rider over time & don’t get caught in those situations any more. Without definite proof either way, I’ll keep the pipes for now.

Well that narrows it down!!!

Think people might be deluding themselves about the effectiveness of noisy pipes. Can’t recall a time when I’ve ever noted a noisy pipe within a car cabin, and I don’t play music when I drive. Mind you, some people even have trouble registering emergency services in their vehicles.

Drivers are insulated from their surroundings and you have to treat them as such.

Personally I’d rely on defensive riding any day over ‘noisy pipes’.

Well, I tend to agree. There are some fools out there with ridiculously loud “look-at-me” pipes, and they sure don’t fit them for safety reasons. Audible, but not antisocially loud would be the best way to go. My daily ride, on the other hand, is a bit too quiet. It is bright yellow though…

I agree, I have never had loud pipes on any of my road bikes. It just screams look at me & I didnt want that attention from the police, my bike had 133hp in 230kg anyway, its plenty fast enough.

You are wong on the second point to a degree, I used to work up at Dickson & we used to knock all the loud bikes back same when I was on the road as an or road inspector. It takes 10 minutes on most bikes to change the pipes so as soon as it cleared, within 1/2 an hour of leaving the test station they can be loud again.

I’m not pointing the finger at the rider here, not witnessing it myself I couldn’t judge, but I ride and there are some dumbass riders on the road.

Rule #1 is be seen, so I was astounded one day when tootling (in the cage) along the Parkway I spotted a bike doing about 120-130 coming up behind me in the other lane. Just as I expected him to pass, suddenly there was nothing, he was gone. I know not why but the rider had decided suddenly it was time to do the speed limit and had parked himself smack-bang in my blind-spot.

For my first bike I couldn’t justify the cost of pipes. I’m bike-less at the moment but next time around they’ll be on the must haves list. Be seen / be heard!

This makes me sick. I can understand that accidents like this happen, but for someone to knowingly drive off, leaving behind a someone with potentially life threatening injuries really shocks me.

That is pretty poor. And you’d think that, anyone witnessing a car wipe out a motorbike and then drive off, would have contacted police pronto.
