I understand the car fair in Mitchell no longer exists, but does the one in Woden still happen? Anywhere else?
Will they be happening over Easter?

Hi Treefrog there is an excellent carfair at Gumly when you drive into Wagga (nice 2.30 hr drive) and recall it being opened both Saturdays and Sundays.
Brand Depot used to have one although may have closed the carpark near the airstrip before the new shops were put in.
If you contact one of the shops there, say Costco, they could tell you.
I remember the car fair at the Belconnen markets used to always be so busy on weeekends with a wide range of cars on display. It really used to be the way to sell your car before online. I personally have had good success with Car Sales and Car Point.

Ok thanks for that 🙂 No wonder no one was answering their phones.
I bought my last car at Woden, which I now want to sell to buy an AWD.
The good thing about the car fair was that you could go there and look at a whole lot of cars at once, rather than traipse around town, having to make multiple phone calls, appointments etc.
They still have these things called car yards where you can view multiple cars at once. Plenty at Phillip, Tuggeranong, Belconnen, Fyshwick and a few at Mitchell.

I’ve lived in Canberra a total of 26 years (in various chunks) and still get confused as to which suburbs are Belco or Tuggers. 😛
The roundabout on the corner of William Slim Dr and Chulculba Cres Giralang usually gets around 10 cars per weekend these days.
They seem to happen on a smaller scale in NSW, generally in high traffic locations, such as the roundabout at the corner of Lanyon Dr and Southbar Rd in Queanbeyan. I cant think of any other sites off the top of my head, but these unofficial spots where you can sometimes find a dozen or more cars for sale seem to pop up around the place from time to time.
The car fair in Woden used to do well because it was located next to Trash and Treasure in the old carparks which were razed to make way for the new police station and the apartment development.
When Trash and Treasure was relocated to the carpark opposite Hindmarsh Drive ten years ago the car fair tried to continue in its old location but closed down once allclassifieds.com.au started up which quickly became the only place to buy and sell used cars and made The Canberra Times classifieds redundant.
Thanks for this walk down memory lane, I’d forgotten about the car fair until this post. Hopefully in a few years time someone will ask on RA “Is there still a daily newspaper in Canberra?” Actually, people are asking that now as their circulation figures plunge.
As far as I know the Woden car fair no longer trades, nor any in Canberra for that matter. Online classified advertising has made them obsolete.
I’ve never actually been. Are/were they good? A lot of people travel to Sydney to buy cars. What were you looking for? I can hook you up with a car a friend is selling if you want a 97 lancer? lol
