It looks like the cataract surgery was carried out by a charity. How people choose to donate their charity dollars is up to them. Comments about Shane Rattenbury or A&E or surgery waiting times are irrelevant.
I personally don’t donate to any charity operating in this country, because that’s what we pay taxes for, and I am happy to pay increased taxes.
The rumour that Marcus Fillinger is training kangaroos in marksmanship was started by me, just now.

I’m 100% with on avoiding charities and paying more tax, however I am still appalled that despite all the poor, desperate people old and young who cannot afford desperately needed surgery, some socipathic “charity” is wasting money on utter stupidity that helps nobody.
Wildcare? RSPCA? the list goes on. One person’s charity is another person’s utter stupidity.

Mr Fillinger is a little different in appearance from many animal rights people…
This is a good thing, IMHO.
You mean he washes his hair occasionally?

C’mon people, a little considerationfor the ‘roo here. The 90kg kangaroo ‘received’ cataract surgery. A ‘receipt’ of a surgical procedure implies an condoned acceptance of sorts…lets not allow a few violently administered pre-op tranquilising darts tarnish the procedure.
Just out of curiosity, how were the week’s worth of ‘as required’ eye drops administered post-op?
How Canberran.

Hmm. The ‘offending’ and rather ambiguous quote from the article says:
“Mr Fillinger is a trained military marksman who uses a dart gun to tranquilise kangaroos that require relocation. He recently helped immobilise a 90-kilogram kangaroo that required cataract surgery. ‘‘I actually isolated him, put him into care and had the cataracts removed,’’ Mr Fillinger said. ‘‘Now he’s in care and he will be released in the next couple of weeks.’’
But doesn’t actually say where the kangaroo was from or who was funding the exercise.
Cataract surgery for a kangaroo? Straight away. Prostate cancer operation for a 52 year old man? Wait for almost 18 months. Great set of priorities by our Greens/Labor government!
The article in the Times doesn’t indicate the thought process that was undertaken that led to the procedure being carried out on a wild animal and by whom it was undertaken.

Another wast of money the mind boggles
This was a topic of conversation at Sunday dinner yesterday: we seemed to have a 100% consensus across 3 families that Rattenbury’s kangaroo-relocation plan was incomprehensibly senseless. Even the vegetarians at the table couldn’t see any merit in it.
On the other hand, all those with recent experience of A&E agreed it appeared to be under-funded, while others working in various social services claimed there are a great many human Canberrans that could do with increased charity/funding and that money wasted on kangaroos was an insult to them and their special needs.
Rattenbury is out of touch, if not actually nuts.
If it can see, at least it will have a sporting chance in next years cull.
