ACT Policing arrested and charged an 18-year-old Charnwood man following an act of animal cruelty in Gungahlin yesterday (Friday, September 30).
Around 3.40pm, police attended a recreation park at Yerrabi Pond after receiving a report of a deceased black swan at the location.
Police located the alleged offender a short time later in a vehicle parked on Wunderlich Street in Gungahlin.
The man was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House, where he was charged with Aggravated Cruelty to an Animal Causing Death. He was released on Watch House bail with strict conditions, and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on October 14.
North District Superintendent Mick Calatzis said police are working with other ACT Government agencies, and are concerned about the seriousness of this incident.
“Animal cruelty matters are a criminal offence and are treated as such by police,” Superintendent Calatzis said.
Anyone who witnessed the incident at Yerrabi Pond yesterday, and is yet to speak to police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
