The Dickson Library will close today (28 September) until further notice so asbestos can be safely removed as part of continuing rectification works after damage from the deluge which caused major flooding in north Canberra earlier in the year.
The ACT Government says investigations during the building works found asbestos present in the inactive bathrooms in the subfloor which are not accessible to the public.
It says that like most buildings built before 1990 in Canberra, materials containing asbestos were used in the library’s construction. The library has an asbestos management plan in place and these materials are safe if undisturbed.
The library has been partially opened with limited access to library services to allow the works to be undertaken but this next phase to remove the asbestos requires full closure.
The library will return to partial operations when the removal is completed.
Return chutes at Dickson will also be closed. Items can be returned to another branch, or renewed online.
Libraries ACT apologises for the inconvenience and alternative arrangements are being made for people who have booked a community room at the Dickson Library, and return and request dates will be extended until Friday 5 October 2018.
Library members and visitors can visit another branch, with the closest branches located in Civic, Gungahlin and Belconnen. All other branches remain open and are operating as per normal opening hours.
