Chris Stedman is the Interfaith and Community Service Fellow for the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard University, the Emeritus Managing Director of State of Formation at the Journal of Inter-Religious Dialogue, and the Founder of the first blog dedicated to exploring atheist-interfaith engagement, NonProphet Status.

Chris writes for HuffPost Gay Voices and HuffPost Religion, and he is the youngest panelist for The Washington Post On Faith. His memoir, Faitheist, will be published by Beacon Press in 2012.

Previously a Content Developer and Adjunct Trainer for the Interfaith Youth Core, Chris is an atheist working to foster positive and productive dialogue between faith communities and the nonreligious. He speaks and leads workshops on this topic at college and university campuses across the United States.

Missed the last folk fest, but been to a couple and I saw some amazing things. Real laid back atmosphere too, everyone’s so friendly, old and young, this and that, even saw a metal type with the piercings and the rest of it, and nobody so much as bat an eyelid, everyone welcome.

I’ve found with some friends they’re judgemental about it. Folk is easy to send up. (Bender: I crack corn and I don’t care I crack corn and I don’t care…). But like said here, all sorts of stuff. Good atmosphere too.

I got me a CD from one Nano Stern from Chile I think it was. “Nano Stern folk festival” youtube for instance, latin (with a nice rendition of walzing matilda in there somewhere if you find it, just beautiful).

Also once saw Eddie Reader (from fairground attraction “its got to be perfect” fame), a slice of Ireland, now there is a voice that just… I can’t even begin to describe it. Transcendental perhaps.

Even if you go for the evening ticket price you can get three or so gigs for what you’d pay to just see one, plus all the stuff on the side. Plus beer if you want it. Fired pizza. Instruments for sale. Various things.

Can’t lose, I reckon. Dive in.

I’m going to assume there are people like me reading this that rarely get out and take advantage of some of the terrific opportunities that come up simply because it looks too hard – too far away, hard to find parking or transport, costs too much, yada yada yada.

Can I make a genuine and heartfelt recommendation to go, just for one day, to the Folk Festival? Mrs Snarky and I started attending a couple of years ago. At the time it was ostensibly a “consolation prize” for not seeing Lyle Lovett in Sydney, but from my POV nbow the Folk Festival far, far outstrips any mere concert in depth, entertainment and value for money. It’s an amazingly diverse event – not at all “just folk” and with so many performers both international down to local on so many stages, all day, you’ll find the time from the 10am open to midnight close just slides by in a rollicking good time. Never heard of 99% of the performers? Seriously, it doesn’t matter! These people are good and I can guarantee you won’t leave without at least one new CD from someone you were previously unaware even existed.

So if you’re at a loose end this weekend and have ears and a brain come out to Epic – it’s a cracker event!
