ABOUT CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF
PG | 1958 | DCP | USA | D: Richard Brooks

A washed-up, alcoholic ex-football star (Paul Newman) and his frustrated wife (Elizabeth Taylor) navigate lies, repressed desire and shame on a plantation in the US South. Nominated for six Oscars, the film adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ classic play has been criticised for denying its own central theme – the denial of sexuality. For modern audiences, the added layer of self-censorship in the film enhances the viewing experience.

‘Homosexuality is everywhere and nowhere in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. And perhaps that unspokenness is realer than the play.’ – The Guardian

Available as a 4-film Tennessee Williams Spotlight pass with Suddenly, Last Summer, A Streetcar Named Desire, and The Night of the Iguana. Learn more.

ABOUT THE BELCO JAZZ BAND
The Belco Jazz Band is a Canberra-based ensemble led by pianist Matt Dennett, featuring some of the city’s finest jazz instrumentalists. Tracing a century of jazz history — from the smoky swing of the 1920s to soulful blues and vibrant original works — the trio performs with timeless groove, style, and creative flair. A crowd favourite among local swing dancers, the band brings joyful energy and authentic connection to every performance.
