Three kids grow up in ’80s South Central LA amid systemic racism, gun violence and poverty. Doughboy (Ice Cube) gets involved in gang culture, Tre (Cuba Goolding Jr) goes to live with his strict dad, Furious Styles (Lawrence Fishburne), and Ricky (Morris Chestnut) tries to escape the neighbourhood through a football scholarship.
Director John Singleton, who made the film at age 23, grew up in South Central and earned praise for an unflinching look at both the dysfunction and idealism in the area. He became the first African American, and the youngest person, to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, as well as an Academy Award nomination.
