The Canberra Punjabi Sports and Cultural Association (CPSCA) is organising a one-day Khed Mela (Sports Festival) on 1 October 2023, Sunday at the Taylor 1 Sportsground Trevor Gibson Way Taylor ACT 2912 from 9 am to 6 pm.
The sports activities will include kabbadi, cricket, soccer, volleyball, athletics, tug of war and some fun games. CPSCA will organise a free concert by popular Punjabi singers. The Canberra Khed Mela (CKM) will have multiple stalls that including food, traditional clothing, footwear and jewellery, and promotional stalls by sponsors. Jumping castle, henna and other free fun activities will also be provided.
The event will be promoted using social media, community radio, local radio stations and news networks. It will also be covered by local and international Indian and Punjabi media. Many local dignitaries, elected representatives and community leaders will be attending the event.
As in 2022, the CKM will have police presence to ensure that the event is free from unsocial elements and extra security will be organised at the time of the concert. CPSCA takes up a community cause every year. This year the CKM will promote awareness about blood donation or pain awareness.
The purpose of the CKM is to:
• Bring Canberra communities together
• Raise awareness of Panjabi language, sports, culture, and food
• Support active community involvement and cross cultural awareness
• Promote harmony and social cohesion
• Encourage people to participate in sports, encouraging health and wellbeing
• Increase in Canberra tourism by people visiting the CKM from other regions
• Dissemination of information on matters of community significance
• Promote and support local businesses.
