The NFSA marks IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia) with a screening of Spanish drama 20,000 Species of Bees: an intimate and considered portrait of childhood gender discovery.

The story centres on eight-year-old Lucía as she begins to interpret the complexities of her gender. Tensions emerge and relationships are strained at the beekeeping family’s remote country home – particularly for Lucía’s mother, who must come to terms with her own revelations.

This tender, highly acclaimed film was nominated for the Golden Bear and won the Guild Film Prize at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival.

‘…impressively fluid, determinedly naturalistic filmmaking, with performances that never hit a false note’ – The Hollywood Reporter
