When warrior Ridjimiraril (Crusoe Kurddal) spears the wrong man for a crime, he must face payback. The film takes a story-within-a-story structure, with both strands set before colonisation.
Rolf de Heer, David Gulpilil and the Ramingining community collaborated on the first feature film entirely in First Nations languages. Sparkling with gentle humour, lush cinematography and mythic style, the film stars Gulpilil’s son, Jamie.

“Ten Canoes’ effect is not just the re-awakening of tradition and pride in a contemporary Indigenous audience but also historical, personal and aesthetic lessons for a non-Indigenous audience.” – SBS
