A father and son from Western Sydney have faced court after allegedly assaulting two referees at a Rugby 7s competition in Canberra earlier this year.

Fagalima Faumui, 42, and his 18-year-old son Daniel Fagalimafaumui, who are from the suburb of Fairfield, were both issued a single count of assault over the allegations.

An ACT Policing spokesperson previously alleged that the incident occurred during the junior Rugby 7s tournament held at Southwell Park playing fields in Lyneham around 3 pm on 21 September.

It is alleged that the father and son entered the playing fields before Mr Fagalimafaumui assaulted the first referee.

When a second referee tried to help the first, Mr Faumui allegedly ‘coward’ punched the second from behind.

This referee was allegedly knocked unconscious and taken to hospital.

Mr Faumui and Mr Fagalimafaumui were both formally charged when they faced the ACT Magistrates Court for the first time on Monday (24 November).

Their lawyer, Legal Aid’s Donovan Kelso, asked for both their matters to be adjourned for ongoing legal advice and to process their applications for assistance from his service.

Their matters were adjourned to 13 January 2026.

Rugby 7s is a variant of rugby union played in two seven-minute halves, with seven players per team.
