ACT Policing are investigating the cause of two fires in Belconnen and O’Connor last night (Monday, April 11).
About 8.00pm, Police responded to a report of a fire at Westfield Belconnen. ACT Fire Brigade trucks were in attendance.
The fire was traced to two waste paper bins located in the male public toilets on the ground floor adjacent to Woolworths. The fires had been extinguished by Woolworths staff prior to ACT Fire Brigade arrival.
A large amount of smoke was produced by the fires, with ACT Fire Brigade evacuating Woolworths as a precaution. No structural damage was sustained, with only minor heat damage to the nearby toilet sink and bins.
In a separate incident, at about 9.30pm, ACT Policing attended a fire at a unit complex in Macpherson Street, O’Connor.
The fire involved several household items in the parking space. The fire has caused minor damage to water pipes and a ventilation fan.
Any witnesses who were around Westfield Belconnen or Macpherson Street in O’Connor at the time of either offences, and who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
