Five teens in a stolen car

An off-duty AFP member assisted ACT Policing in the arrest of five teenagers at the weekend.

Around 2pm on Saturday (May 28), the off-duty member heard the sounds of a vehicle crashing at the intersection of Dalrymple and La Perouse Street in Red Hill. He saw the vehicle, a Holden Commodore with NSW registration, come to a stop on Dalrymple Street, and five teenagers flee the vehicle.

The off-duty member notified ACT Policing Operations, and provided detailed descriptions of the driver and four passengers.

A short time later, a Woden patrol attended the corner of Johnston and Finniss Street in Narrabundah, where they located the five teenagers.

Three boys and two girls aged between 13 and 14 years of age were arrested and taken to Woden Police Station. Two of the boys and the two girls were released and are expected to be summonsed at a later date.

A 14-year-old boy will face the ACT Children’s Court this morning (Monday, May 30) charged with drive motor vehicle without consent and unlicensed driver.

So, what does the judiciary do now? Dealing with 13 and 14 year olds can be difficult. Do you throw the ‘book’ (as well as the whole damn table) at them or is it a ‘one-off’ kiddy thrill for them?

For my mind, I’m for the book, table and chairs as well!!!!

You can bet that at least one of them will be ‘known to police’, I’m for the book on this one, this could easily have ended up with some innocent people spread all over the road like strawberry jam.

Good work police. Let’s hope the prosecution proceeds efficiently despite the ages of the kids involved, and let’s hope the judiciary support the police in doing something effective to prevent continuation of same behaviour.
