Australia’s booming cyber industry is hot property in 2025, but you won’t find the best jobs in Sydney or Melbourne.
Canberra takes the top spot instead, having solidified its place as the nation’s cyber capital with a deeply engaged private sector and close ties to federal government.
Local cyber companies work directly with heavy hitters in government, defence, environment, education, health and more.
Individuals can access great opportunities in public and private sectors. Researchers are spoiled for choice by national institutions in science, technology, democracy, arts, culture and history.
And if you’re new to cyber but keen to learn, our city places top-rated universities and training providers right at your fingertips.
Founder, CEO and lead cybersecurity architect at Solution Tech Group, Rohit (Roy) Borekar is based in Braddon. He says Canberra businesses lead the way for innovation and mobility, but they’re also part of a tight-knit community that looks after its own.
“I think everyone who works here knows how important it is to stay ahead of the curve,” Roy says.
“The strength of our cybersecurity ecosystem comes from being collaborative rather than competitive.
“Canberra is a small city. So we all know each other and share a common goal, which is to protect Australia against rising cyber threats.”
Roy founded Solution Tech as a generalised IT support company, but cybersecurity quickly became its most crucial department.
Solution Tech Group’s innovative approach eventually led to a partnership with the University of Canberra internships program, which places students in real cybersecurity environments.
Since then, Roy and his team have mentored more than 70 undergraduates.
“It’s the best way to inspire the next generation and give them a good start for a solid career,” he says.
“Something else I appreciate about operating in Canberra is how our efforts are rewarded by the community.
“We were immensely proud to win Cyber Security Professional of the Year – Government and Defence at the most recent Australian Cyber Awards. This was up against huge names like Microsoft, Bupa and Deakin University, so was a wonderful recognition.”
Solution Tech Group is veteran-owned and run. Roy works with not-for-profit Soldier On to provide cyber career pathways for active and former Defence personnel.

Plenty of pathways into cyber exist. But Roy recommends Canberra Cyber Hub as a key resource for any job search.
“We have worked alongside Canberra Cyber Hub since the beginning,” he says.
“They’re an important connection between all corners of our local industry, from business and government to education and research.
“It’s organisations like these that make Canberra’s cyber landscape so valuable.”
Canberra Cyber Hub offers a range of online tools anyone can use for free.
They include a course finder, which covers short courses and certificates through to masters degrees and PhDs, a career insights page which delves into different cyber occupations, and a jobs board with details for local vacancies.
Directories for businesses, education/training providers and current research projects are also available.
For anyone keen to learn from the greatest minds in cyber, Roy describes Canberra as the place to be.
“Cybersecurity is a high-demand, well-paid career that offers job stability, global opportunities and constant growth,” he says.
“It’s the perfect industry for those who love solving problems, staying ahead of the curve and making a real impact by protecting people and organisations with purpose.
“Canberra isn’t just the capital city of Australia, it’s our cyber capital as well. There’s no better place to make your start than here.”
