Canberrans looking to buy an Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Abarth or Jeep will soon need to look further afield after a major dealership shake-up.

Gulson Canberra, a Fyshwick fixture since 1963, has confirmed it will stop selling the four Stellantis-owned brands at the end of September.

The news comes after Sydney-based Autosports Group bought the long-running business earlier this month in a $12.5 million deal that included Porsche Centre Canberra.

“Gulson Canberra will conclude Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Abarth and Jeep sales on 30 September 2025,” the dealership said in a statement to customers.

“Until then, we invite you to visit our showroom to explore remaining stock and take advantage of special pricing before we close. Our service department at 10 Barrier Street remains open and fully operational for the time being. We encourage all customers to book any upcoming services early.”

The company hasn’t said why it’s dropping the brands, but it’s likely none were strong performers.

Last year, Alfa Romeo sold 36 cars in the ACT; Jeep, 28; and Fiat, 15. For reference, the ACT’s best seller was Toyota with 2944 sales in 2024.

At this stage, the change won’t make any impact to servicing for the thousands of Canberrans already driving cars from the four departing brands.

A spokesperson for Stellantis Australia said the company’s “priority is to ensure all existing Jeep, Alfa, Fiat and Abarth customers in Canberra and the surrounding area continue to receive support and service”.

“Customers can still access authorised servicing, warranty and repair support through our broader national network of authorised dealerships,” a spokesperson told Region.

“We are committed to minimising any disruption and our customer care team is available to assist with any questions regarding ongoing maintenance, warranty or repairs.”

The company also stressed it was not walking away from the ACT altogether.

“Stellantis Australia regularly reviews its network and market opportunities. We remain committed to the ACT region and will continue to assess options for the future.”

For the Gulson family, the decision to sell to Autosports Group marks the end of a 62-year chapter.

Founded by motorsport enthusiast Ray Gulson in 1963 and later run by his son Graham, the dealership grew from a tuning shop into four sites across Fyshwick.

Porsche Centre Canberra, Gulson Pre-owned and Gulson Classic were located on Newcastle Street, with Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Jeep and most recently, Leapmotor, sold at 279 Canberra Avenue.

Porsche and Leapmotor will remain open for business as usual.

Autosports Group CEO Nick Pagent said the company was “delighted to have the opportunity to represent the Porsche brand” in Canberra, describing the purchase as part of a strategy to grow its national prestige and luxury portfolio.

Autosports already operates more than 75 dealerships across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Auckland, representing some posh names including BMW, Audi, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati and Lamborghini.

My exact same thoughts. Why sell stuff that’s not viable. Protect your customers that bought far better brands.

I’m not sure what to think about this except it’s pathetic to think that Canberra dealerships won’t sell these brands when places like Sydney and Melbourne do. Kinda’ makes you realise why foreigners mistake Sydney as the capital of Australia.

Alfa Romeo 36, Jeep, 28; and Fiat, 15 : What sort of commission would you need to charge per vehicle to run a business with those numbers? Canberrans have voted with their dollars

Is this because of the ban on single-use plastics? If so, when will the sellers of other disposable vehicles such as MG, Kia, Great Wall and Byd follow?

Don’t think there will many tears shed over those 4 brands as their quality has been very ordinary for many years.
