WIN is tweeting that the long vexed tale of the Gungahlin Drive Extension (band name or what?) will be completed this October.
Who would have thought we should (hopefully) live to see this day?

I quite liked the bikelanes, apart from the crap surface. Now we have the “Bike Lane Closed” which just means take the lane. Lucky I drive the GDE once a week so I can see there’s zero thought for cyclists – no space and the surface is unrideable in places.
Its bad enough heading south from the Aranda Bridge, the current trick of closing the right lane and obstructing the bike lane with the work truck is worse for me than the traffic controlled single lane was.
Don’t worry, even if they do somehow manage to finish it by October, I’m sure they’ll manage to keep the roadworks speed limits in place for a good couple of months afterwards.

BTW when it is finished, do we stop calling it GDE and just use Gungahlin Drive?
I think of it as the Gungahlin Drive Exasperation…
How about the GDF

Can anyone explain to me why the newly resurfaced sections of the GDE between Barton highway and wells station road are bumby as all hell? Does anyone actually look at the quality of the contruction during this project? no excuse for a new surface to be so bumpy.
Maybe it will be opened somewhat like the AMC was?
I seem to recall that John Hargreaves ‘somewhat’ opened it a couple of years ago.
Too bad it won’t relieve congestion, particularly at the Glenloch interchange, so will build another road to relieve congestion (Majura Parkway). The ACT Government should have watched the show on New York,SBS and how building roads and bridges caused gridlock it New York, thanks largely to Robert Moses.

Why not go back to its original name, the John Dedman Parkway? (Something about that never did sound quite right…)
Hmmm. 10 years in the making, over-budget by $150m plus.
World War 1 – 4 years
World War 2 – 6 years
We could have fought two world wars and still have cost less than the GDE!!!

.. I predict that it will be a parking lot on day 1, just like it was on the first opening day.
So, you also think it should be called the ‘Gungahlin Parkway’? 😉
No no no. This is just a hoax perpetrated by someone trying to increase the pain of the already tortured motorists of North Canberra.
The GDE roadworks and associated traffic nightmares are destined to continue in perpetuity.

I’ll probably be calling it the GDE for a good 12 months after, even if they do.
Anyone got odds on “Gungahlin Parkway”?
Bridgecollapse Drive.
Just to make some of the highlights involved in building the GDE memorable…
Or maybe Caswell drive considering a good 1/3 of the extension is named this.
Quite a few sections have had the final surface laid, so it could just be true…
