Couldn’t agree more. As a recent adopter of Gluten Free eating (medical grounds, thank you for asking), I say the more who offer GF food, the better.

While neither a restaurant, nor in Braddon, can I also suggest Thr1ve at Canberra Centre and V-Spot Café on City Walk as inner-city GF food outlets.

Deeks is more a bakery than a restaurant – they offer muffins, slices, pies and sausage rolls as well as their various loaves and ingredients.

I think StrangeAttractor was making a tongue-in-cheek comment about the increase of people who demand gluten-free when they don’t actually have an intolerance to it.

I’ve been trying to cut down on my use of emoticons, but should have used one here. My comment was also meant tongue in cheek.

There was a time when I would have kissed my waiter for even knowing what GF meant! 🙂

In response to the OP, rather than asking what is GF, as most places cater for it now, just pick a couple of restairants you really like the look of, and if their online menu does not specify on the GF front, give them a call. The list of who can’t do GF would be much smaller than the list of who can.

I think the comment meant to imply that the person in question can’t actually eat gluten. There’s quite a few people out there who don’t eat gluten because it’s ‘trendy’.

What does this gluten stuff taste like? Is it one of those exotic things like tofu?
Can you order it as a condiment to go with your meal.
I notice that the only Burgen bread I can buy at the local Woolies is now all “Gluten Free” so it must be trendy, like “99% fat free”…………….

Sweet Bones have some things, but aren’t open in the evenings. I think I remember hearing from gluten free friends Elk and Pea have good gluten free burgers, and you can get gluten free buns from Brod Dogs. All you can do is look at the menu and hunt around though, plenty of places will give you the old “we offer gluten free food” then only offer plain meat or a garden salad.

You don’t have to be diagnosed coeliac (or trying to be ‘trendy’) to be actively avoiding gluten.

Some people suffer stomach and digestive upset after consuming wheat products like bread, pasta, etc. The effects of which are not the end of the world, and certainly not as damaging as coeliacs disease, but probably not a nice end to a meal if you’ve got to spend the next 24 hours with reflux, doubled with cramps or sitting on the throne.

In terms of where you can go in Braddon – as commenters have already said, 80/20 (not to be confused with eightysix across the road), and Sweet Bones (next door to 80/20) probably have the best variety of gluten free meals. Other cafes like Elk & Pea and Farmers Daughter have gluten free options too.

80/20 will probably have something to suit.

Most places these would cater to GF (especially in Braddon, haha), unless you want a totally GF kitchen?!
