Tinsel and twinkling lights for the Christmas season can invoke joy and connection in many of us, but they can also trigger stress, loneliness and heightened emotions.

Canberrans have been reminded about the importance of taking time for self-care, and to check in with friends and loved ones, during the festive period.

“While the holidays can be a wonderful time, they can also be challenging for a lot of people,” Mental Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said.

“It’s important to be kind to yourself and others, and to reach out for support if you need it.

“For some, this period can feel isolating. Many people feel lonely at times during the festive season, especially if they are experiencing grief or a change in their life.”

Self-care can conjure images of massages, yoga sessions at sunrise or soaks in a deep, scented bath.

But it can look different to each of us: if it makes you feel regulated and relaxed, then it is a valid form of looking after yourself.

Ms Stephen-Smith also had some general advice to boost wellbeing over the holidays.

“Simple steps like staying connected with loved ones, taking breaks from the Christmas hustle and bustle, and doing activities that matter to you can make a big difference to your wellbeing,” she said.

“Connection is one of the most powerful tools we have for protecting our mental health.”

In-person mental health support can be accessed at the Belconnen Safe Haven during the Christmas break.

At 56 Lathlain Street, it is open from 3 pm to 10 pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Its number is 0421 154 147.
