Agree with above. I’m a bit puzzled as to why the OP is so determined to get a Psychiatrist for his/her kid also. Since the OP knows exactly what a psychiatrist is, I’m guessing that the OP wants a clinician that can prescribe drugs.
If it’s just psychological help the kid needs, then most people would opt for a psychologist, who are more numerous, more accessible, cheaper, definitely younger, but they can’t prescribe drugs.

i thought maybe they were just life coaches or even frogs but i agree maybe young ones are just really hard to findWeird and biting sarcasm directed towards someone trying to offer some useful insight and explain why things are as they are? I’m unsurprised that you’re looking for psychological assistance for your child. I wouldn’t like to be her.
+1

A psychiatrist is not the same thing as a therapist or psychologist. In order to become a psychiatrist, you must first become a regular doctor and then go on to do a specialty. It takes twelve years minimum. Psychiatrists tend to be older because it takes so long to become one, and so difficult that demand outstrips supply. They stay working for ages out of sheer professional commitment: if they don’t do the job, there’s simply no-one else that can. You simply will not find a young one. Sorry.
Very brave, I thought you would get different responses being RiotACT. The audience would normally harrass you with the “why, how old, what for questions” by now.
Anyway, this is an alternative option which depending on the “child” provides awesome theropy without your child having to discuss the “whole” reason.
A really good child psych for standard therapy or PSH up to you is :
Joanne Keighley
Registered psychologist, hypnotherapist and P.S.H. therapist working in the Canberra area.
1 Friendship St, Red Hill
What is PSH?
Many peoples’ lives are unhappy or diminished because of painful feelings such as anxiety, anger, guilt, hypertension, or continual sadness. Commonly people report other symptoms that accompany these feelings, for instance, lethargy, tension headaches, sleep difficulties and ultimately depression.
Private Subconscious-mind Healing (PSH) is a groundbreaking therapy that is proving highly effective in helping these people turn their lives around and regain wellbeing. Initially, PSH can seem similar to a guided meditation. It is deeply relaxing and non-intrusive, but at the same time it is proven, powerful, effective therapy. PSH enables the individual to involve the whole of their non-conscious resources to bring about the healing of painful, recurring emotional states and responses. PSH is genuinely a subconscious therapy and is not dependent on any counselling or the need to talk about past events. We recognise our conscious memory as very limited and not always reliable. At the conscious level we tend only to address symptoms, whereas the real causes of our pain are much deeper. When guided into meditation or a deeply relaxed state of mind, there are certain physiological, mental and emotional changes that start to occur. These changes allow access to our deeper levels of mind. PSH provides a guide at this level and through a series of steps leads the inner mind to review and re-evaluate the original causes of our anxiety or pain. This inner communication is always private and is not dependent on the client even understanding the reasons why they may have been anxious or depressed.
Further stages in the PSH process encourage a gentle release of past emotion such as hurt, anger or sadness and reconciliation with previously unintegrated or denied aspects of ourself.
PSH will normally involve four sessions, ideally about a week apart. Our clients are provided with a meditation CD and encouraged to practice daily during the course of the therapy. In this way a familiarity is developed with the letting go response and progressively more profound experiences are encountered.

What do you think a younger psych will be able to offer that an older one will not? These “into and above retirement age” psychiatrists, were they in the public of private system?
For young people, their rapport and relationship with their psychiatrist or psychologist is just as important as the work done by the psych. So it’s logical that a younger person *may* relate to and get along better with a younger psych than a really old one (by young, I’m not talking their own age; just not grandparent age…).
+1 for headspace ACT, they’re excellent and will try and match your daughter to a suitable psych.
You could try contacting headspace ACT – (National YOuth Mental Health Foundation)
headspace ACT provides support, information and assistance for young people aged 12 to 25 years who are experiencing emotional or mental health issues and/or a substance use issue.
Even if they don’t have a psych on staff they may be able to advise…

Sorry, just to clarify, you want a GOOD psychiatrist, but you’d rather they be young than experienced?
